Is your Tumblr blog a little too boring-looking for your tastes? Want to give it a face-lift and really spice it up? Well, how about changing its theme? You can give your blog a quick and easy make-over by selecting a pre-made theme, or if you're creative and have the time (or at least know someone who is good at web design), you can make your very own custom Tumblr theme!
Log into your Tumblr account.
Click the "Account" icon and click on one of your blogs.
Click Edit Appearance.
Click Edit Theme.
Click Browse Themes.
Select a category of themes to browse, or search for a specific theme.
Click on a theme, and then click Use.
Click Save, and then click Exit.
Yikes! That's a lot of steps! Don't worry, though; the process is fairly straightforward, and we're going to walk you through it in full, with pictures that will show you where everything is.
Open your web browser, go to www.tumblr.com, and log in.
Click the Account icon in the top-right corner, and click the name of the blog that you wish to change the theme for.
In the upper-right section of the blog, in the main blog menu, click Edit Appearance.
Scroll down to the "Website Theme" section and click Edit Theme.
You will be taken to your theme editing screen. To quickly switch your current theme with a pre-made one, start by clicking Browse Themes.
If you just want to see what themes are available for free, click the drop down menu that says All Themes and select Free Themes. You can also select another option to see themes with a particular design. Furthermore, you can click the magnifying glass icon and type in search terms to look for a theme by name.
If you want to see even more themes for Tumblr, go to https://www.tumblr.com/themes.
Click on a theme in the menu on the left (you can scroll up and down to see more themes) to preview it in the window on the right. If you like how it looks, click Use at the top of the screen.
If you're satisfied with everything you've done, click Save, and then click Exit to go back to your blog settings.
You can make your own custom Tumblr theme if you want something extra-special, or don't like any of the themes available to you. Unfortunately, it's a bit tedious and technical in nature, as you have to know how to write HTML computer code to do it. But if you have a friend or family member who is skilled in web design, they might be able to help you with it!
To get started, follow the tutorial in the preceding section until you get to step 5. Then, instead of clicking Browse Themes, click Edit HTML.
This help article from Tumblr can help you with what to do from there.
You can also just skip clicking Edit HTML and play around with a bunch of quick settings further down the menu to the left. They may be different based on the theme that you've currently selected, and for some of them, it may be difficult to understand what they do without trying them out yourself. If you're stuck, consider asking a friend or family member who's more technically-inclined for help.
Now you know how to change your Tumblr blog's theme if you ever want to give it a new look!
