How to Download and Sign Up for Yik Yak

Now that you know what Yik Yak is and how it works, and have read our review of Yik Yak to determine whether or not it’s right for you, you probably want to get started using it. Yik Yak is currently available for Google Android and Apple iOS devices through the Play Store and the App Store, respectively. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to download and install Yik Yak on an Android device, but the process is almost the same on an Apple device.

To download and install Yik Yak:

1. Find the Play Store (or App Store) on your device, and tap it to open it.

Using your mobile device, tap the Play Store to find Yik Yak with Android, or tap the App Store to find Yik Yak with iOS.

2. Tap the search bar and search for the Yik Yak application.

Tapping in the search bar, type “Yik Yak” using your on-screen keyboard.  Select the option that has Yik Yak's icon, a yak.

3. Tap “Install” and wait for Yik Yak to download and create a shortcut on your device.

You will see the progress of the download in the Play Store/App Store window as Yik Yak installs itself on to your device.

4. Tap “Open” to launch Yik Yak, or tap the Yik Yak icon on the home page of your device.

Yik Yak is now installed on your device. To launch Yik Yak, you can tap the green Open button. Or, you may return to your home screen and locate the Yik Yak icon, which you can tap to launch the app.

To sign up for Yik Yak:

1. Launch the Yik Yak app on your device.

Find the Yik Yak icon on your device’s home screen and tap it, or tap Open after downloading Yik Yak in the Play Store (or App Store).

2. Enable location services, and give Yik Yak access to location tracking and your phone.

Ensure location services are enabled on your phone, as Yik Yak requires knowing where you are located in order to function. Yik Yak will prompt you to allow it access to your location and your phone, so you must tap Okay, and then tap Allow twice to allow Yik Yak access to the functions of your phone that it needs.  Then tap Okay again at the end.

3. Enter your phone number, and send a code to it to verify your phone with Yik Yak.

The next step is to verify your phone number for Yik Yak. Tap the box labelled “Phone Number” and use your device's on-screen keyboard to type your phone number. Then tap Send Code. Yik Yak will then send a text message to your phone with a code. Read the code, and then go back into your Yik Yak app and enter the number in the box labelled "Type In The Code We Sent You". If it’s correct, Yik Yak will automatically move you to the next screen.

4. Choose a Yik Yak “handle” (username).

On the next screen, tap in the box labelled "Enter Your Handle" and type a user name you would like to use for Yik Yak. Choose carefully, as this is how other Yik Yak users will identify you and your posts. You also cannot change this user name once you accept it. Tap Claim This Handle to confirm the user name you have chosen.

If you want to check the availability of the user name you have chosen, tap Check Availability. Yik Yak will check its database and let you know if another user has already taken it. If this is the case, you will need to select another name.

5. Add a profile picture (optional).

Yik Yak will now give you the opportunity to add a profile picture to your account. Tap Add Photo, and then choose to either immediately take a picture or select an existing picture from another source. Once you select an image, you will have the chance to crop it into a square to match the size of Yik Yak images. You may also tap Skip at the top-right corner of the screen if you would prefer not to add a profile picture.

6. Tap “Let’s Go.”

This is the final step! Once you tap the Let’s Go button, you are all set to begin using Yik Yak!

Tap the Let’s Go button to get started using Yik Yak and complete your sign up.
