Now that you know the basics of Foursquare, you may want to sign up for an account and start using the website. In this article, you’ll find everything you need to know to help you do this. We’ll also explain exactly how to use the website, so you can become a Foursquare pro in little time at all!

For this tutorial, we will be using Google Chrome, but any web browser should do the trick.
You can find the yellow Sign Up button in the top-right corner of the home page.
The drop-down menu that appears will give you options for signing up for Foursquare. Click Sign Up with Facebook to sign up using your Facebook account credentials, click Sign Up with Google to sign up using your Google account credentials, or click Or Use Your Email to sign up with your email address.
If you choose to sign up with Facebook or Google, you must follow the directions and prompts presented to you by either of those services. If you choose to sign up by email, continue following our directions below.
On the next page, click in each of the boxes provided and type in (or select) your email address, a password for your account, your first name and (optionally) your last name, your birthday (day/month/year format), and your gender. You may also add a profile picture if you wish by clicking Choose File, navigating through your computer files to find a suitable picture, clicking on that picture, and then clicking Open.
When you’re finished, click the Sign Up button.
You are now signed up for Foursquare. If you’ve already used the app to sign up, you can skip this section, and merely sign in to your account (instructions below).
On the homepage, you can search for fun things to do all around you. Simply indicate what category of activity you are looking for, and where you want to look for it. To do this, click the I’m Looking For drop-down menu for suggestions, or click inside the box and type in the category of places that you want to see. Then click the box beside it and type in your location, if it isn’t automatically detected. Click the green Search button when you are finished.
You can also do a quick search by ensuring your location is accurate, and then clicking on one of the buttons below the search bar. You can choose from Food, Coffee, Nightlife, Fun, and Shopping.
From here, you will be taken to the search results page, where you can view all of the great local attractions that may interest you.
Your search results on Foursquare will show you short snippets of what the activities or locations you looked for are all about. They will sort themselves by default based on their Foursquare user rating, which is a score out of 10. To view options from highest rated to lowest, simply begin scrolling down the webpage. Click on the name of any venue or business to learn more about it.
The results will also appear on the right side of the screen in a map. They will be numbered to correspond with their rating numbers along the left side. Click on any of the blue map pins to automatically jump to that business on the left side of the screen.
If you're looking for something specific, you can also easily filter your search results to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. At the top of the list of results, you can click Specials, Haven’t Been, Following, Price, Open Now, Saved, or Liked to add that filter to your search. To remove a filter from the search, click the filter again.
To learn more about any venue by viewing specific details about it, you need only click on the name of the place or activity. Then, scroll through the facility's page to view photos, information, and reviews on it. As you scroll, you can see posts from users, tips about the place, reviews of the place, and the location's current Foursquare rating.

To leave your own reviews, you can choose to simply rate the venue, leave tips for other users, or both! In the middle of the screen to the right, click on either the heart, neutral face, or broken heart icon to rate the venue as being great, so-so, or poor (respectively). The location's numeric Foursquare rating may go up or down based on your rating, and the number of ratings it has been given will change immediately.
If you want to leave a bit more detail for other Foursquare users (like sharing your own experience), you can leave travel tips. Scroll down to the “Tips and Reviews” section, and click in the box labelled “Leave a tip for others…”. Then, type in your tips and tricks for that venue, or write about your personal experience at that place.
You can also click the camera icon to add a photo to your tip or review. Search through your computer files until you find a relevant picture, click on it, and then click Open.
When you’re finished, click the green Post button to share your tips with the community.
While on the page of a venue you have been to or think you would like, click the Save button at the top-right corner of the page.
A pop-up menu will appear asking you to which list you would like to add this place. By default, you will have a list titled My Saved Places; you can click this to save the current location to that list. If you have any other lists, you can save the current venue to one of those lists by clicking on it. If you’ve already saved a location to a list, a black checkmark will appear beside the list's name. To remove the current facility from a list, simply click on the name of that list.
If you don’t have any lists yet, or want to create another one to suit this new place you’ve discovered, click Create A New List on the pop-up menu. Then, simply type in a name for your list and click the green Create button.
Foursquare can make suggestions about places you might like. And the more you use it, the more accurately it can predict where you might like to go. Therefore, make sure to save and rate locations you like in areas you are familiar with. That way, when you’re researching activities in a new city, Foursquare will be able to predict what you might be interested in.
To find the suggestions Foursquare has made for you, simply click on the name of a venue or location you like. Scroll down, and on the right side of the page, locate the section titled “You Might Also Like.” Foursquare will show you other locations that it thinks you may like, in the order it thinks you would enjoy them. Click on the name of any place to learn more about it!
If you want to share lists of the places you’re looking for with your friends on another social media account, it couldn’t be easier. After completing your search, simply click the Share button on the right side of the screen.
Click On Facebook or On Twitter and follow the prompts and directions from that website to allow Foursquare to post on that account. You can also click Via Foursquare or Via Email to share your search in these manners. In these cases, click in the box labelled "To" and enter the email addresses of your friends. You can also click in the box labelled "Add a Note" and type in an optional message, if you wish. When you’re finished, click the green Share button.
Foursquare loves learning more about you to help better predict the places you would love to go in any given city. To help improve Foursquare’s ability to do this, you can add “tastes” to your profile. “Tastes” are just some keywords you can select to indicate you are a fan of those things. Foursquare can use your tastes to help find places that include those keywords on their profiles.
To add tastes to your profile, move your cursor over the profile picture icon on any page, and then select Add Tastes from the drop-down menu.
From there, simply click on any keyword to add that “taste” to your profile. To de-select any taste, simply click on it again. To see more keywords, click Show More at the bottom of the page. When you’re finished, click Done. You can update this at any time as you continue using Foursquare.
Foursquare has a function called “Trip Tips” that allows you to let your friends and contacts give you information about a destination city. You can use this feature to plan a trip, knowing exactly where you should be going when you get there. To access Trip Tips, move your mouse cursor over your profile picture icon, and then click Trip Tips in the drop-down menu.
Click in the box with the magnifying glass, and then type in the name of the city you want to go to. Then click Next.
In the next box that appears, you can enter as much additional information as you want about your trip to help others help you. This is optional, but it will help anyone sharing tips with you better figure out what you would like. When you’re finished (or if you don’t feel like adding more information), click Next.
On the final page, click either the Share on Facebook button or the Share on Twitter button to choose which social media website you would like to share information about your trip on. From there, follow the instructions to post your trip on the appropriate account so your friends can start sharing tips.
Now all you need to do is wait for your friends and contacts to add tips to your trip, or make suggestions about where you should go. That way, you can plan the best trip ever!
To access your profile, you simply need to click on your profile picture icon from any page. At the top of your profile page, click Edit Profile to add information.
Click on any of the boxes shown in the screenshot below and type in or select information about yourself, such as:
You can also add a profile picture by clicking Choose File at the top of the page, navigating through your computer files until you find a suitable picture of yourself, clicking on that picture file, and then clicking Open.
When you’ve finished, click Save Changes.
Note that, for the most part, adding information to your profile isn’t mandatory. However, it can help users feel that you are more trustworthy, and feel more confident in any reviews or tips you post.
To change your settings, move your mouse cursor over your profile picture icon, and select Settings from the drop-down menu.
Use the menu on the right to choose categories for your settings. Click on any one to change the category.
Most of the settings can be changed by clicking on the check boxes associated with them. If the box has a check mark in it, the setting is enabled. When the box is empty, the setting is disabled.
To sign out of your account, simply move your mouse cursor over your profile picture icon on any page. In the drop-down menu that appears, click Log Out (the last option on the menu).
