How to Use Weebly

Now that we're through the introductory lessons for Weebly, it's time to show you how the actual website works!  In this lesson, we'll go over how to actually create your website using Weebly.  It's a little more straightforward to use than, but not quite as free-form.

To create a website with Weebly, you'll need to sign up for Weebly with your email address, your Facebook account, or your Google account.  Next, you'll need to select a theme for your website.  Next, you'll need to give your website a domain name.  Finally, you'll need to use Weebly's commands to build your website.

Signing up for Weebly

  1. Go to in your web browser and click Try It Free in the top-right corner.

  2. A window should pop up containing a sign up form.  If you click one of the two buttons at the top, you can sign up for Weebly using your Facebook or Google account.  (If you do so, follow the instructions for logging into your respective account, and skip the rest of this step.)

Otherwise, you can click in the box labelled "Full Name" and type in your name.  Then, click in the box labelled "Email Address" and type in your email address.  Finally, click in the box labelled "Password" and type in a password with which to protect your account.  When you're all done, click Sign Up.

The essentials of using the Weebly website editor

  1. After signing up for Weebly, you'll have to choose a theme for your website.  Don't worry; if you don't like your current theme, you can go back and change it later.  Click one of the categories at the top to see available themes for that category.  Move your mouse over a theme that you like and click Choose in the bottom-right corner of the picture to select that theme.

  2. Once you have your theme chosen, you will be asked what kind of domain you wish to use for your website.  If you just want a free website that Weebly can host for free, click the button beside "Use a Subdomain of".  Then, click in the box within that option and type in a name for your website (without using any symbols or spaces; Weebly will automatically erase these).  Weebly will let you know whether your website name is taken or not.  Once you see that your domain name is available, click Continue.

  3. After you have your theme and domain, it's time to actually start working on your website!  If you see an empty space on your website, you can click Choose a Layout to put a pre-built element structure in that space.

Like when choosing an overall theme, you can select from different categories of layouts; click the layout you want to see what it looks like.  Then, when the "Layout Preview" box pops up, click Keep to stick with this layout, or click Cancel to go back and choose another one.

  4. You can also build your own layout of stuff to put on your web page.  Click the Build menu across the top of the screen, and then click Elements.  After that, click and hold the mouse button down on an element in the left panel that you want to add to your website.  Drag the element into the main window and release the mouse button to place the element.

  5. Different elements will have different options when you click on them.  For example, the element we've chosen to add here is a title.  So, if you click on it, you can type text in with your keyboard to change what the title says.

You can also click one of the buttons in the toolbar above it for more options, like making the text bold, increasing or decreasing the text size, or adding a hyperlink to your title.  Just move your mouse cursor over a button for an explanation of what it does.

  6. Moving your mouse cursor over an element when it's not selected gives you further options.  For example, you can click the arrow on the left to move the element to an available space on a different page, or copy it to the same (or a different) page.  Or, you can click and hold the mouse button down on the handle in the middle, and drag the element to a different position on the page.  Finally, you can click the "X" on the right to delete the element.

  7. To add a new page to your website, click the Pages menu at the top of the screen.  Then, in the sidebar on the left, click the "+" sign, and then click the type of page that you want.  Type in what you want to name your page, and then click Save.

  8. If you want to change the theme of your website, click the Theme menu at the top of the screen.  Then, click Change Theme in the sidebar on the left.  This will take you back to the theme selection process in step 1 of this section.  As you can see, there are other customization options here, too, such as the ability to change the background colour of your website.

  9. When you're ready to make your website go live, click the Publish button in the top-right corner of the screen.  (You may have to complete the domain selection process outlined in step 2 of this section, if you haven't already).  Then, complete the security check, and click Okay, Publish My Site.
