How to Reblog on Tumblr

Have you ever found something cool while searching or browsing other people's posts on Tumblr?  Did you wish that there was an easy way to make a similar post on one of your own Tumblr blogs without trying to recreate the whole thing from scratch?  Lucky for you, there is!  It's called "reblogging", and this lesson will go over how it works and how you can do it.

What is Tumblr's "reblogging" feature?

Tumblr "reblogging" is the act of copying a post on somebody else's Tumblr blog and publishing that post on one of your own Tumblr blogs, while giving the original author credit.  It's sort of like making a citation in a research paper: giving someone else credit for their ideas, which you're saying in your own words.

To reblog on Tumblr:

  1. Open your web browser, go to www.tumblr.com, and log in.

  2. Find a post on a Tumblr blog that you wish to reblog, and click the "Reblog" icon beneath it.

  3. Choose which of your blogs you wish to reblog the post to.

  4. Optionally, you may add an alternate description or tags to your reblogged post.

  5. Click Reblog.

Woah... based on the number of steps it takes, is reblogging on Tumblr really that easy?  As a matter of fact, it is!  Just take a look at the full set of instructions below if you don't believe us.

Detailed instructions for how to reblog on Tumblr

  1. Open your web browser, go to www.tumblr.com, and log in.

  2. Find a post on Tumblr that you like; you may need to search other people's Tumblr blogs to find one (see our How to Search Tumblr tutorial).  For now, we'll just use one from the suggestions on our sample account's dashboard.

Once you find a post that you want to reblog, click the Reblog icon in the lower-right corner.

  3. In the top-left corner, click the drop-down menu and select which of your blogs you wish to copy this post to.  Notice that, beside this menu, you can see the Tumblr ID of the blog that you're reblogging the post from.

Like when you create original posts on Tumblr, you can click in the areas below the main part of the post and add a description or tags (even if the original post already had one or both of these).

When you're done, click Reblog.  (Note that you can select alternate publishing options for a reblogged post as well, like making it private or scheduling it to be published later.)

That's how reblogging on Tumblr works!  See, we told you it was easy!
