What is Netflix?

Netflix is an on-demand provider of hundreds of popular television shows and movies that you can stream. "Streaming" means that you can watch the video file for a movie or TV show as it loads, rather than waiting for it to fully download before you can watch it. With TV, you have to wait for your show to air – or you may have to record it if you know you’ll miss it – but with Netflix, you’re able watch your favourite shows and movies anytime, anywhere.

Watch Netflix Anywhere, Anytime

With Netflix, you are able to watch your favourite movies and shows on-demand from wherever you are. So long as you have an Internet connection, you can stream videos from Netflix on:

  • Smartphones (iPhone, Android)

  • Tablets (iPad, Android)

  • Smart TVs

  • Computers (desktop, laptop, Mac)

  • Gaming Consoles (Playstation, Xbox)

Whether you’re taking public transit, at a coffee shop, or sitting down in a waiting room, you can use your mobile device to stream Netflix to keep you entertained.

Netflix Original TV Shows

With Netflix, you’ll be able to watch your favourite shows whenever you want them. Rather than waiting for a new episode each week, Netflix releases the entire season of episodes at once – no more waiting to watch what happens next.

With a Netflix subscription, you’ll be able to access Netflix Original series, exclusive to Netflix. This means you will not be able to find it on any channels from your regular cable or satellite provider. Here are three of the most popular Netflix Original series:

Orange is the New Black

Based off Piper Kerman’s memoir of her experience in a woman’s prison, the show follows Piper as she is sentenced to 15 months in a woman’s federal prison after being caught transporting a suitcase full of drug money.

Hemlock Grove

Set in the fictional town of Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania, the show examines mysterious happenings and murders, as the town’s newcomer and the heir to the town’s wealthy family befriend each other and work together to shed light on the case.

House of Cards

A political-drama series adapted from the BBC series of the same name. Set in present-day Washington, D.C., the show follows Frank Underwood, who, after being passed over for appointment of Secretary of State, concocts an elaborate plan to get himself into a position of power.

NOTE: While this show is available on cable TV, Netflix has the rights to show it first before anyone else can.

Netflix DVD Rental

You don’t have to settle with just streaming shows and movies, you can get rental DVDs sent to you by mail. Currently, over 6 million people are subscribed to this service. NOTE: This service is only available in the United States
