Amazon Trade-In Program

Got a bunch of books, movies, CDs, video games, or electronics lying around? Want to clean house AND get credit towards Amazon purchases in the process? Consider participating in Amazon’s Trade-In program, one of the great features that sets Amazon apart from its competition.

How does Amazon Trade-In work?

Amazon Trade-In allows you to ship things that you don’t want any more to Amazon, free of charge. Amazon sends the items to a third-party merchant registered with Amazon who wants them. In return, you’ll receive credit on your Amazon account worth the value you were offered by the merchant(s) who wanted your item(s).

A couple of things to note about this program:

  • You have to be at least 18 years old to participate in it.
  • You have to ship from an address in the United States.
  • The items you trade in don’t have to have been purchased from Amazon or one of its third-party merchants.
  • The items you trade in have to be the same as what Amazon has in their product database.
  • The items you trade in have to meet the product condition criteria outlined at https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200302910. Basically, they have to work properly, and can’t be damaged or have parts missing.
  • Items that you trade in that don’t follow the above two rules will be rejected.  If applicable, they may be returned to you within two weeks at no charge to you.
  • If an item you trade in has an internal data storage device (like a hard drive on a video game console, for example), all data on it will be deleted when it is received by Amazon. This is to ensure that your privacy is protected.

How to trade in items on Amazon

1. Go to www.amazon.com and log in. Then, go to the Amazon Trade-In Store (use this link to get there; it’s a bit hard to find otherwise).

2. Under “Find the Items You’d Like to Trade In,” click the left-hand box to open a drop-down menu and select what type of item you’d like to search for offers for.  Then click in the white box and type in the name of the item or keywords associated with the item (use a comma to separate multiple terms). Finally, click Search.

Find items for trade-in

3. Amazon will now show you a list of items in its database that have names or keywords that match your search terms, as well as whether or not any of its registered third-party merchants are offering to buy them.

You can click the filtering options in the left-hand menu to narrow down what you’re looking for; the faint numbers next to each option show you how many search results are associated with that criterion.

If you see an item that you have that an offer is being made for, click Trade In.

Filter through trade-in items

4. You can now select options related to what you are trading in.

Options for trade-in

Click the box under “Quantity” and type in how many copies of the item you’re trading in, and then click one of the buttons underneath “Condition” to declare how well-kept those items are (move your mouse over a condition name for some general guidelines). Then, click Update to see how your changes have affected the value of your trade-in.

You can also click Delete beside an item if you decide that you don’t want to trade it in after all, or you can click Add Another Item if you want to trade in something else. In that case, select one of the categories from the drop-down menu, and then repeat steps 3 and 4.

When you’ve selected all of the items that you wish to trade in, click Continue.

5. You will now need to select shipping options. You will also need to enter your address in case your items need to be returned.

Select shipping options for trade-in

Click a button beside a shipping option to select it. If you choose “Carrier of Your Choice,” you may need to print a shipping label for that carrier at your local post office (instead of directly off Amazon), and you may have to pay for it.

Next, click in the boxes and drop-down menus under “Enter an Address” and input:

  • your full name
  • your street address
  • your unit address (if you live in an apartment, condo, etc.)
  • the city in which you live
  • the state, province, or region in which you live
  • your mailing code (doesn’t have to be a U.S. Z.I.P. code)
  • the country in which you live
  • your phone number

When you’re done, click Save This Address.

6. Now, click Ship from This Address next to the address that you just created.

Choose shipping address form

7. You will now select whether or not you want Amazon to return any items (free of charge) that do not meet the condition criteria that you selected for those items.

Click the button next to either “Return the item” or “Do not return the item” to make your choice, and then click Continue.

Choose to return items

8. Now, you’ll have a chance to review what you’re trading in. If something’s off, click Edit in any of these categories, and follow the associated steps above. If everything looks good, click Submit Your Trade-Ins.

Review your selections before submitting

9. If you selected the option for a pre-paid shipping label, you can print it on the next page, and then attach it to the box that you’re shipping your items in. Otherwise, you can take care of this when you take your package to the post office.

Either way, you can now pack your items, apply the proper postage, and send them off. Be sure to do this within a week of submitting your trade-in request, or it will automatically be cancelled!

10. Once your package is received, you’ll receive credit on your account. To check this:

  • Move your mouse over “Hello [Your Name]: Your Account,” and click My Account.

  • Under “Your Other Accounts,” click My Trade-In Account.

  • Under “Trade-In Links,” click View Gift Card Balance.

View credit applid to your Amazon account after trade-in

And that’s how to trade in your unwanted items to Amazon and get store credit in return! This can be a great way to get some extra money towards future Amazon purchases, all the while de-cluttering around the house and getting rid of things you don’t want or need.

How to Return Amazon Items

Did you order something on Amazon, but didn’t receive what you wanted, or received an item that wasn’t in the same condition as what you saw online? If you need to return an item, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ll explain when you can return an item, and how to do so step-by-step.

The Amazon Returns Policy

Generally, Amazon allows you to return any item that you buy from them within 30 days of receiving it for a full refund, exchange, or replacement, under their A-to-z Guarantee protection (click here for more on the Amazon A-to-Z Guarantee).  Most third-party sellers have this same returns policy, but some have slightly different policies.  Be sure to check a third-party seller’s policies if you’re going to buy from them by clicking their name when it’s highlighted in blue or purple (indicating an Internet link) and then clicking on Detailed Seller Information.  The seller’s returns and refunds policies should be somewhere on this page, usually near the bottom.

Amazon seller information

Also note that certain types of items sold on Amazon may have specific stipulations attached to their return policies.  For example, certain collectible memorabilia items must be insured or include proper documentation when they are returned, and certain digital-only items or prepaid cards can’t be returned at all.  See this help article for a full list of Amazon return policy stipulations on different kinds of items.

One final thing to note is that if you return an item to Amazon and request a refund, and your reason for returning the item is not directly caused by an error on Amazon’s part, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund.

How to return items ordered on Amazon

  1. Go to www.amazon.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. In the “Let Us Help You” menu at the bottom of the screen, click Returns and Replacements.

  3. Click Return Items.

  4. Use the drop-down menu on the next screen to search for an item or order within a specific time frame (2 months, 6 months, within the year, or within a year ago).  Once you find the order or item that you’re looking for, click Return or Replace Item(s) beside it.

  5. Click the check box beside each item that you wish to return (if applicable), select the quantity of each item that you want to return, (if applicable), then click the drop-down menu for each item under “Why Are You Returning This?” and select a reason for your return.  Then click in the box labelled “Comments” that appears for each item and type in a slightly more detailed explanation of the problem you’re having with the item (up to 200 characters).

When you’re all done, click Continue at the bottom of the screen.

  6. On the next screen, select how you want to resolve your return issue.  You may be able to get a refund, or you may also be able to exchange or replace the item.  Click the button beside the option you want, then click Continue.

Choose to exchange or replace the item

(NOTE #1: If you purchased your order or items from a third-party seller, you will click Submit Return Request instead.  This allows the seller to review your issue and offer a remedy accordingly.  If you have a problem with the seller, such as them not getting back to you within two business days, you can file a A-to-Z Guarantee claim. Click here for more on the A-to-Z Guarantee).

(NOTE #2: If you select to exchange or replace an item, you will be able to create a new order that uses the same shipping speed as the original order; this is probably to avoid confusion with shipping costs.  For items such as clothes, if the new item is a different size than the one you ordered, you will not be charged extra if the new item costs more.  For any other differences, however, Amazon will charge or refund you if the new item costs more or less than the old one, respectively).

  7. Now, you will choose how you want to return your item. Click the button beside the method that you wish to use, and then click Continue.

Choose a method for returning your item

(NOTE #1: Some return options may require a return shipping label. If you select one of these options, Amazon will email you a shipping label, which you can then print out and attach to the package in which you’re returning your item or items).

(NOTE #2: If you select “Pick-Up,” you will need to also select a date for the item or items to be picked up, and an address at which they will be picked up.  Assuming that you’ve already ordered something from Amazon, your shipping address will be used by default, but you can click Change Address if you want the item picked up somewhere else).

  8. Now, all you have to do is pack up the item(s) that you want to return (along with the receipt or receipts), print out and attach the shipping label(s) associated with each return (if applicable), and then mail them off to Amazon, or wait for a courier service to pick them up and take them off your hands. Then, just wait for your refund or exchange/replacement item to come in.

That’s how to return items on Amazon!

How to return an Amazon gift

If you received an item or order from Amazon as a gift that someone else bought you, and you have a problem with it, you can still return it.  However, you will only receive a refund in the form of a virtual gift card (as credit on your account).  The process is similar to returning an item or order that you purchased yourself on Amazon, but there are a few differences.

  1. Go to www.amazon.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. In the “Let Us Help You” menu at the bottom of the screen, click Returns and Replacements.

  3. Click Return A Gift.

  4. Click in the box labelled “Order Number (With Dashes)” and type in the unique number that was attached to your gift order (move your mouse cursor over How Do I Find This? if you’re having trouble locating this number).  Then click Search.

    Input Amazon Gift order number

  5. Once your item or order has been found, click the check box beside each item that you want to return (if applicable).  Then, for each item you’re returning, click the drop-down menu beside “Reason for Returning” and select a reason why you want to return this item.  Then, for each item, click in the box labelled “Quantity to Return” and type in how many of the item you want to return (if applicable).  Then, for each item, you can click in the box labelled “Comments” and type in a slightly more detailed explanation of why you are returning the item (up to 200 characters).

(NOTE #1: Some return options may require a return shipping label.  If you select one of these options, they will email you a shipping label, which you can then print out and attach to the package in which you’re returning your item or items).

  7. Now, simply re-pack whatever you want to return (along with the receipt or receipts), print and apply any shipping labels that need to go with each return (if applicable), and then send them off to Amazon, or wait for them to be picked up by a courier service. Your gift card should appear on your account shortly.

That’s how you return a gift that someone buys you on Amazon!

How to Get Amazon Coupons

Sometimes, it’s not as easy to get a deal on Amazon as it is with some of its competitors. While certain products may sell for a bit below retail price, there are still taxes, shipping and handling charges, and other fees that can drive the price of your order up. If you’re the kind who likes to save every cent that you can, Amazon coupons may be what you’re looking for. Here’s how to get these cost-saving coupons:

  1. Visit websites like Coupons.com, RetailMeNot.com, or PassionForSavings.com.
  2. Search “Amazon” on the website (usually at the top of the page).
  3. Find a recent coupon you would like to use.
  4. Click Use This Coupon/Activate/etc. depending on the website, or copy the code and paste it into Amazon while checking out.

You can also start this process by simply searching “Amazon coupons” or “Amazon promo” in your favorite search engine, and then finding the same websites (or similar ones) that are listed above. Just remember that many of these promos will be expired, or will not work because they are not real codes, so try using a website you know and trust from the start.

There are two general kinds of coupons that you can use on Amazon: on-site discount coupons, and external promotional codes. We’ll explain what each of those are and exactly how to apply them to your order, and below we’ll go into more detail about obtaining promotions from external websites, if the instructions above were a bit too quick for you.

On-Site Coupons

Amazon offers coupons right on its own website that give you one-time discounts on products that you buy directly from Amazon (i.e. not third-party sellers). To find these on-site discounts:

  1. Go to www.amazon.com in your web browser and log in (if you haven’t already). At the top of the screen, click Today’s Deals.

    Log into Amazon

  2. Now, click Coupons.

    Amazon Coupons menu

  3. You will now see a list of items that the website has on-site coupons for. You can click on one of the options in the menu on the left-hand side to narrow down your search by the type of product, what’s popular, and so on. You can also use the arrow buttons on either side of each category to scroll through coupons for products in that category.

When you see a product that you want that you want to save some money on, click Clip this Coupon underneath it.

    Clip a coupon for Amazon

  4. The button will change to say Coupon Clipped. Click this button, or click on the product’s picture, to take you to that product’s page. NOTE: You may have to choose a specific product if the coupon applies to a group of similar products.

Choose a product to apply the coupon to

  5. You will notice on the product page that there is a new section labelled “Coupon” which tells you that a coupon is being applied to the purchase of this item, and how much it’s worth.

Amazon coupon appears on your payment statement

  6. Now, continue making the purchase as you normally would. When you get to the page where you’re asked to select your payment method, make sure the check box beside “Use Your [amount] Promotional Balance” is marked. If it isn’t, click it to mark it.

Choose a payment method for your purchase

The amount of your coupon will be subtracted from the sale price, before fees and taxes are applied.

Amazon Promotional Codes

Promotional codes are sometimes found in emails and flyers from Amazon, but are more easily found on retail discount websites such as Coupons.com and RetailMeNot.com. They will usually give you deals such as free shipping, or 10% off your order. To find promo codes:

  1. Type “amazon coupon codes” or “amazon promo codes” into your search engine of choice (one will most likely find results for the other). Then click on a link like the ones highlighted in the screenshot below.

Search for Amazon coupon codes in your web browser

  2. In the example here, we’ve found a promotional code on Coupons.com (they shouldn’t be too hard to find; you may need to click a button that says Get Code or something similar). Write the code down for use later, and make a note of what products you can use it on.

    Record codes for Amazon products

  3. Now, go through the process of ordering an item that you can use the promotional code for. When you get to the final checkout screen, before you confirm your order, click in the box labelled “Gift Cards and Promotional Codes,” type in the code you wrote down, and click Apply.

Amazon gift cards and promotional codes form

Note that the code may not work if you use it on an ineligible product, or the code has expired.  In that case, try a different product, or try a new code.

And that’s how you get great deals on Amazon with promo codes and coupons! If you want to learn some more ways to save money with Amazon, be sure to read our next tutorial article on how to get free shipping.

How To Use Amazon’s Wish List

If you’ve already created an Amazon account, and have learned how to make purchases, you may be wondering about something you’ve seen on Amazon called the “Wish List.” In this article, we’ll explain what a Wish List is, how to create and add items to your Wish List, and how to share it with friends. Read on to learn more!

What is a Wish List on Amazon?

Is there a product on Amazon that you want, but can't get right now?  Maybe it's out of stock at the moment, or you're waiting for its price to come down.  Or maybe you run a business and there's a set of items that you get on a regular basis, like whiteboard markers or printer ink.  The website's "Wish List" feature helps you keep track of goods that you may not want or be able to get right now, but will be buying in the future.

How to create and add items to a Wish List

  1. Go to www.amazon.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. In the top-right corner, move your mouse over "Wish List", and click Create a Wish List.

    Amazon Wish List

  3. Under "Get Started," click Create a Wish List.

    Create an Amazon Wish List

  4. Great!  Your wish list is created. There are two big problems with it, though.  The first is that it doesn't have a name, so it'll be kind of hard to tell what kinds of items are in it. Let's fix that.

Move your mouse over the list's current name (it should say "New Wish List" in big letters) and click Edit List Name.  Then click in the text box that appears and press the "Backspace" key on your keyboard until the name disappears.  Then type in a new name and click Save.

    Edit Amazon Wish List name

  5. The second problem is that you don't have any items on your wish list yet.  Fortunately, that's pretty easy to fix, too!  Just find an item that you want to add, click on it to see its details, and then click the arrow beside Add to Wish List and select the wish list you want to add it to.

Add item to Amazon Wish List

  6. If you eventually decide that you don't want an item on your wish list anymore, just go back to your wish list, find the item that you want to get rid of, and click Delete Item next to it.

How to share an Amazon Wish List

As an example for this tutorial, we created a wish list for what you might want to buy a young male relative (e.g. son, grandson, or nephew) for their birthday or for some other special occasion, like Christmas.  But what if, instead of buying the items yourself, you wanted to send the list to other family members as a way of suggesting gift ideas?  Here's how to do it.

  1. Move your mouse over "Wish List" in the top-right corner and select the wish list that you want to share from the drop-down menu.

    Share your Amazon Wish List

  2. To share the list in an email, click the envelope icon (email icon) next to "Share" (or just click Share). Next, click in the text box within the window that pops up and type in the email address of the person you want to send it to.  If you want to send it to multiple addresses, just make sure to type a comma (,) in between each address.  Finally, click Send Email.

    Share Wish List by email

  3. To share this list on Facebook, click the Facebook logo (Facebook logo) next to "Share" to bring up a new window.  If you aren't logged into Facebook, you will be prompted to do so.  When you've set your post up the way you want it, click Share Link.

Share Amazon Wish List with Facebook

  4. To share the list on Twitter, click the Twitter logo (Twitter logo) next to "Share".  When the new window pops up, click in the box labelled "Phone/Email/Username" and type in the appropriate information from your Twitter account.  Next, click in the box marked "Password" and type your Twitter account password.  Finally, click Log In and Tweet.

How to delete an Amazon Wish List

If you decide that you no longer need a wish list, you can get rid of it. Here's how:

  1. Move your mouse over "Hello, [Your Name]: Your Account" in the top-right corner and click Your Wish List.

    Access Amazon Wish List

  2. Once you're on your wish list page, click Manage Your Lists in the menu on the left.

    Manage your Amazon Wish List

  3. Now, beside the list(s) that you want to get rid of, click the check box below "Delete" to mark it, and then click Submit.

(NOTE: You will not be asked to confirm your choice, and this action cannot be undone, so be sure that you really want to delete a wish list before you do so!)
