SoundCloud Settings

There are a number of different ways to customize your SoundCloud experience, from what people can see on your profile to what kinds of emails you get to what other social networks your SoundCloud updates appear on.

To access your SoundCloud settings, go to www.soundcloud.com in your web browser and log in.  Then, click the three dots in the top-right corner and select Settings from the drop-down menu.

Accessing your SoundCloud settings

Besides Pro Plan (which deals with your paid subscription, if you have one), there are six categories of settings for SoundCloud; click one to access settings for that category.  We’ll go over them in detail below.

Categories of SoundCloud settings

Profile settings

Settings for your SoundCloud profile

These settings control what information about you is visible on your SoundCloud profile page.

Content settings

Settings for sharing your SoundCloud content

With these settings, you can set up an R.S.S. (“rich site summary”), which people can subscribe to in order to get new music from you as soon as you upload it to SoundCloud.  You can also apply “creative commons” licensing to any new music that you upload, which means that you’re allowing other people to modify it and perhaps even use it for commercial purposes.

Generally, these are advanced settings that you won’t be using if you’re just on SoundCloud to listen to stuff, so don’t worry about them too much.  We’re just letting you know that they’re there.

Account settings

SoundCloud account settings

There are three things that you can do with these settings.

The first is changing your password if you want a stronger password protecting your account.  Under “Password”, click Send Reset Password Link to send yourself an email with a hyperlink that will allow you to change your password.  See our How to Change Your SoundCloud Password tutorial (here) for further instructions.

You can also click the drop-down menus under “Basic Information” to change information related to your birth month and year, as well as your gender.

Finally, you can click Delete Account to begin the process of deleting your SoundCloud account.  See our How to Delete Your SoundCloud Account tutorial for specific instructions.

Connections settings

Connecting SoundCloud to other accounts

These settings allow you to manage how your SoundCloud account interacts with other social media accounts.

Click one of the buttons under “Connect to Your Accounts” and log into that account to be able to quickly share information about your new tracks, playlists, and favourites in an update on that account.

You can also click either of the two text boxes underneath “Sharing Note” and type in a default update for your social media accounts whenever you upload a new track or create a new playlist, or you mark a track as a “favourite”.  Click Save beside the box to lock in your new message.

The “Connected Applications” section shows what Internet accounts and applications you have allowed to access your information on SoundCloud.  Click Revoke Access beside an account or application name to disconnect it from your SoundCloud account.

Email settings

Managing how and when you get emails from SoundCloud

With these settings, you can manage what email addresses SoundCloud can contact you at, as well as what kinds of email communication you will receive from SoundCloud.

At the top, under “Email Addresses”, you will see which email addresses you have registered with SoundCloud.  Click the button beside an address to set it as the main one that SoundCloud will send emails to.  You can also click in the box under “Add Another Email Address” and type in another email address (that you control, of course), then click Add to add it to your account.  This is useful in case you lose access to one of your email accounts, but need to reset your SoundCloud password.

Under “Activity Notifications”, you can click the check boxes to choose to have (or not have) SoundCloud send emails to you when:

  • Someone shares a track or playlist to you and a few others

  • One of your followers shares a track with you

  • Someone sends you a private message

  • Someone “favourites” or comments on one of your tracks

  • A track is submitted to one of your groups, and requires approval

  • Someone reposts one of your tracks

You can also click the check boxes under “Email Messages” to allow (or disallow) emails from SoundCloud regarding:

  • New partnerships that SoundCloud has made, and contests run by SoundCloud or its partners

  • New features on SoundCloud, and invitations to SoundCloud events

  • Surveys that you can fill out to provide feedback and advice for SoundCloud

Privacy settings

Controlling your privacy on SoundCloud

These settings allow you to partially control who can contact you and see certain information about you on SoundCloud.

Under “Stealth Mode”, if you have the check box marked, then other users will not be able to see your profile name in their stats when you listen to their tracks (but they will still be able to see what country you’re from and what page you listened to their track on).

Under “Messaging Settings”, you can choose who is able to send you private messages on SoundCloud.  Click a button beside an option to choose “Everyone” or “Only People That I Follow”.

That wraps up our primer on SoundCloud settings!  We hope some of them are of use to you!

SoundCloud Profiles

If you’d like to show off a little bit more about who you are to the SoundCloud community, you can certainly do so by editing your profile.  However, remember that SoundCloud is in large part a social network, so don’t enter any information that you’re not totally comfortable with other people seeing.  See our tutorial on Social Media Privacy for this and other tips when it comes to staying safe and private when using social networks.

How to edit your SoundCloud profile

  1. Go to www.soundcloud.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. Click your user name in the top-right corner, and then click Profile.

  4. At the top part of the screen, you can click in the box labelled “Display Name” and type in a new user name for yourself on SoundCloud (note: you cannot leave this box blank).  You can also click the pencil icon beside “Profile URL” and change the actual Internet address for your SoundCloud profile page.

  5. If you’d like to change your profile picture, click Update Image.  An explorer window will open that will allow you to search for a new picture to use to represent yourself on SoundCloud.  Navigate to the picture you want, click it to select it, and then click Open.  From there, you can click the “+” and “-” buttons that appear to zoom your picture in our out, or click Replace to pick a different picture entirely by repeating this process.

  6. Under the “Personal” section, you can click in the highlighted boxes and type in:

    – Your first name
    – Your last name
    – The city in which you live
    – The country in which you live

The “You On The Web” section lets you add hyperlinks to your SoundCloud profile for other websites or web pages that you control, such as your profiles on other social networks (such as Facebook or Twitter).  Click Add Link, and then click in the box labelled “HTTP” and type in the Internet address of the web page that you control.  Then click in the box labelled “Short Title” and type in a brief descriptor for the website (e.g. “My Facebook Page”).  If you want to delete a hyperlink from your profile, click the trashcan icon beside it.

When you’re done editing your profile, click Save Changes.

  7. One other way that you can customize your SoundCloud profile is by clicking the Upload Header Image button.  This will allow you to choose a background image for your profile.

Change your SoundCloud profile background photo

An explorer window will pop up allowing you to search your computer for a picture.  Navigate until you find the one you want, click on it to select it, and then click Open.  Then, click the “+” or “-” buttons to zoom your picture in or out, or click and hold the mouse button down on your picture and move the mouse around to display a different area of your picture.  When you’re done, click Save.

Those are the different ways that you can edit your SoundCloud profile, so go ahead and express yourself!

How to Download SoundCloud Songs

Can I download music from SoundCloud?

Well… sort of.  You can always download copies of tracks that you yourself have put on SoundCloud.  Some SoundCloud users with paid accounts will also offer their tracks for download on SoundCloud by other users; this is always free of charge.  Still other SoundCloud users will include links on their tracks that allow you to download their music from a third-party website; whether it's free or requires you to pay for it depends on the user and the websites that their links lead you to.

Unfortunately, there is no way to search SoundCloud for songs that can be downloaded — either right from SoundCloud or from a third-party website — so you are going to have to find them on your own. But downloading songs when you are connected to Wifi is generally a good idea. It will allow you to listen when you aren't on a Wifi network, therefore saving significant data usage by Soundcloud.

Downloading music from SoundCloud

  1. Go to www.souncloud.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. Either browse for tracks from genres that you like or search for particular tracks, until you find one with a button that says Download AND has a little arrow beside it (like the one shown in the screenshot below).  Click it to start the download process.

  3. Next, a save prompt should appear.  Click the button beside "Save File", and then click OK.

  4. Now, an explorer window should pop up that will let you choose where to save the song.  Navigate to where you want to save the song, and then click Save.

Choose where to download SoundCloud music to

(NOTE: If this window doesn't appear, check your computer's "Downloads" folder instead.)

  5.  Now, navigate from your computer's desktop to the location that you saved your track in, and double-click on it to listen to it.

Find and play your downloaded SoundCloud music

  6. You may also come across tracks that have buttons that say "Download" (WITHOUT the little arrow) or "Buy on iTunes" or something like that.  If you click on one of these buttons, it will (most often) take you to a website where you can download or purchase the track (and others like it).

Alternate links to download SoundCloud music

Each website is different, so you will have to follow the instructions and/or look for a money amount or a button that says "Purchase" or "Download" and click it.

Anyway, that's a bit of information about downloading music from SoundCloud!
