How to Share Amazon Prime

Amazon has a feature for Amazon Prime users called the Amazon Household Program.  It allows an Amazon Prime user to share its benefits and costs, including media-sharing across Amazon devices and applications, with up to one other adult and up to four children in their family.

To share Amazon Prime

  1. Go to www.amazon.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. Move your mouse cursor over “Hello, [Your Name]: Your Account” and click Your Prime Membership.

  3. Scroll down until you see Share Your Prime Benefits.  Click that, and then click the word “here” at the end of the paragraph (it’s highlighted blue to indicate that it’s a hyperlink).

  4. Scroll down to the “Households and Family Library” section, and click Add an Adult.

  5. If the person whom you wish to share Amazon Prime with already has an Amazon account, have them type in their email and password, and then click Verify Account.  Otherwise, click Create a New Account, and fill out the form on the next page with their name, two copies of their email address, and two copies of a password.  Then click Create Your Amazon Account.

  6. On the next page, make sure that the button beside “We Authorize Payment Sharing” is selected (and click it to do so if it isn’t).  Then click Create Household.

  7. To stop sharing Amazon Prime, move your mouse cursor over “Hello, [Your Name]: Your Account”, and click Manage Your Content and Devices.

  8. Click the Settings tab at the top of the screen.

  9. Scroll down to the “Households and Family Library” section.  Click the person whom you wish to stop sharing Amazon Prime with, and then click Remove This Person from This Household.  (You will have to confirm in a pop-up window that this is what you wish to do.

That’s how to share Amazon Prime with your family!

Amazon Prime Search

Searching for items on Amazon that are (or can be) subject to the benefits of being an Amazon Prime subscriber isn’t a whole lot different from searching Amazon more generally.  If you need some help with (or a refresher on) how to search on Amazon, see our Amazon Search tutorial.

Basically, all you do differently is look for an option in the left-hand menu of filters that says “Amazon Prime”, and click the check box beside it to mark it.

How to search Amazon Prime example: video search

Suppose, for example, that you want to search for a movie or TV show on Amazon Instant Video to see whether or not you can stream it for free as a benefit of being an Amazon Prime subscriber.

  1. Go to www.amazon.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. Click the menu to the left of the search box and select Amazon Video.  Then, click in the search box and type in the name of the movie or TV show that you are looking for.  Then click the magnifying glass to the right of the search box.

  3. When you reach your results page, look in the left-hand menu, under “Refine By”.  Underneath “Amazon Prime”, click Prime Eligible.

  4. You will notice that all of your results now say “Unlimited Streaming with Prime”, and have the Watch Now button beside them.

How to Get Amazon Prime on TV

Can you watch Amazon Prime Instant Video on TV?

As a matter of fact, you can!  There are two ways to do it.  The first is the old-fashioned way: use cables to connect your computer to your TV and mirror your computer’s screen onto your TV.  The other way is to install the Amazon Instant Video application on your smart TV, or a digital media player or video game console connected to your TV.  Then, launch this application, log into your Amazon Prime account, and away you go!

Connecting your computer to your TV

The simplest way to connect your computer to your TV is with a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cable.  You can get one from your local computer or electronics store, and they’re rather inexpensive.  It looks like this:

First, plug one end into your computer’s HDMI port, like so:

Then, plug the other end into an HDMI port on your TV, which looks like this:

After you’re all plugged in, press a button on your TV or remote that says “Source” or “Input” to switch the source feed for your TV.  When you select “HDMI”, your computer desktop should appear on the screen; if it doesn’t, try a different HDMI source (if your TV has more than one), or check your connections.

If you have an older TV that doesn’t have HDMI ports, you can connect your computer’s video and sound separately instead.  First, connect your computer’s video with a VGA, S-Video, Composite Video, or DVI cable.  To help you figure out what they look like, here are the ports that they plug into:

After that, connect your computer’s sound output (look for a microphone symbol) to your TV’s sound input with an audio cable (or set of cables).  They look like this:

Once you’re connected, use the “Source” or “Input” button to change your TV’s source feed.  In this case, though, select either “AV” or “Computer/CPU” instead of “HDMI”.

From there, you can control what happens on your TV screen from your computer!  Happy watching!

Using the Amazon Instant Video application

You can also watch Amazon Instant Video by installing the application for it on your smart TV, or on a digital media player (e.g. Apple TV, Roku, or various Blu-Ray players) or video game console (e.g. Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One, or Nintendo Wii U) connected to your TV.  To learn how to get this application, click this link, and then click on the appropriate device.

Once you install and launch the application, sign in using your Amazon account credentials.  This will link your device to your Amazon account, allowing you to watch Amazon Instant Video on your TV just like you would on your computer.

To find videos that you are eligible to watch for free through Amazon Prime, look for the Amazon Prime Video section on the Amazon Instant Video application home page.

From there, watching Amazon Prime Instant Video on your TV is pretty similar to watching it on your computer.

Those are two methods that you can use to watch Amazon Prime Instant Video on your TV!

Watch Amazon Instant Video on Computer

What is Amazon Prime Instant Video?

Amazon Instant Video is a service from Amazon that allows you to rent, buy, and download hundreds of digital movies and TV show episodes.  If you have a subscription to Amazon Prime, you can watch many of these movies and TV shows on your computer and other supported devices at no extra cost.

How to watch Amazon Prime Instant Video on your computer

  1. Go to www.amazon.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. Move your mouse cursor over Shop By Department, then over Amazon Video, and then click Prime Video.

  3. Move your mouse cursor over a movie or TV show that you’d like to watch, and then click Watch Now.

If you don’t find something that you want to watch right away, you can also search for it.  See our Amazon Prime Search tutorial for how to do that.

  4. Once you begin watching your movie or TV show episode, the Amazon Instant Video player is pretty simple to use.

The large button on the left starts or stops the video when you click on it.  The four smaller buttons on the right, in order, allow you to:

    – Switch your video quality between Standard Definition and High Definition (if HD is available)
    – Turn closed captions on or off (if available)
    – Enter and exit full screen mode
    – Adjust the volume of the Amazon Instant Video player

(NOTE: If you are watching a TV episode instead of a movie, there will be an additional button here that says Up Next.  Click it to view the next episode for that show.)

Finally, click the “X” in the top-right corner to close the Amazon Instant Video player and return to the information page for the current movie or TV show episode that you are currently watching.

That’s how to watch Amazon Prime Instant Video on your computer in a nutshell!
