Funny or Die Presents

If you’re a fan of Home Box Office (HBO), then “Funny or Die” may not be an unfamiliar term to you. In 2010, the success of the website led to HBO airing a half-hour comedy sketch show inspired by the website and presented by the comedic geniuses behind Funny or Die: Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. It is known as Funny or Die Presents.

Like the website, the show sees many celebrities guest starring in their sketches, such as David Spade, Zooey Deschanel, and Gary Cole. But it also regularly features comedians like Maya Rudolph from Bridesmaids and Andrea Savage from Step Brothers (a movie starring Funny or Die co-creator Will Ferrell).

While these episodes are not available on the Funny or Die website, by using their search function, you are able to look up sneak peaks and episode recaps.  (See our How to Use Funny or Die tutorial for more information.)

And that's a quick tour of how to use Funny or Die! Review

Funny or Die is a site full of funny skits and stand-up acts, and everyone likes a good laugh. But everyone likes to laugh at different things. Do your tastes match that of Funny or Die?  Take a look at our review and find out if it’s right for you.

  • Laugh Along with Top Celebrities – Skits can be done well or poorly, and it can be a fine line, but with A-list actors and actresses portraying main characters, many skits are well-executed and hilarious.

  • Easy to Find New Comedians – Funny or Die comes second only to word-of-mouth when trying to find a new comedian to watch, and now you can find them all in one place.

  • Interactive approach gives you a say – By being able to vote whether a video is funny or not, you get to be a part of whether a video becomes “Immortal” or goes to the “Crypt.”

  • Picture-Heavy Interface – The layout of the website has a very picture-heavy background.  This can make it hard for the website to load properly, and can appear confusing to the user.

  • Comedy style may not be of everyone’s tastes –While Funny or Die has videos to suit a wide range of comedy styles, they’re not organized as such and – this being the Internet – don’t let you know when a video has inappropriate content. If this is something that concerns you, then it’s best to be wary while browsing this site.

The Bottom Line: 7/10

While the interface is picture-heavy and can be hard to use, and the comedy may not suit everyone’s tastes, the website makes it easy to find new comedians, see your favourite celebrities act in skits, or find something quick and funny to watch.

What is Funny or Die?

Funny or Die is a website that consists of comedic videos and articles (but mostly videos). It's full of original stand-up acts and skits from Funny or Die's users, and even some celebrity contributors.

The name of the site reflects how content is managed on the website. Users of the site can vote for whether they find a video or article is funny or not.  If more than 80% of users like the video, it gets an “Immortal” ranking.  If 20% or less liked the video, then it gets sent to the “Crypt.”

The website was founded in 2007 and is based in California. It was founded by producer/comedian Adam McKay and actor/comedian Will Ferrell under McKay’s production company, Gary Sanchez Productions. Since then, numerous celebrities have made guest appearances on the website. Actors and actresses such as Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Mila Kunis, and Selena Gomez have all contributed content.

The success of the website skyrocketed in 2008 when HBO bought out a portion of the website and is now responsible for 10 half-hour “Funny or Die” episodes. Also in 2008, a Funny or Die comedy tour took place with Will Ferrell as host.

Funny or Die is a great way to find and support new comedians while having many laughs along the way.
