How to Change Your Pinterest Settings

If you’ve recently gotten in to using Pinterest regularly, and love using pins and boards to express yourself and find inspiration, you may be interested in changing or updating some of your account settings to make sure that what you’re putting out there is exactly what you want others to see! In this article, we’ll show you step-by-step how to access and update your account settings, and explain each category of settings in detail, so you know exactly where to go depending on which settings you want to change.

How to access settings on Pinterest

  1. Go to www.pinterest.com and log in to your account.

  2. Click on your profile icon in the top-right corner to go to your personal page.

  3. Click the gear icon below your name, to be taken to your settings page.

  4. From there, choose a category, and click on any toggle to enable/disable a feature.

Categories of settings on Pinterest

Pinterest organizes all of the settings that you can modify into five categories, listed along the left-hand side of the screen for convenience: Account Basics, Profile, Notifications, Social Networks, and Apps. Click one of them to quickly go to that section. We'll break down the settings in each category below.

Pinterest Settings categories

Account Basics

This affects your general account and privacy settings on Pinterest.  Here are the things you can change here:

  • Email Address — Click in this box and type in the email address that you want to use to log in, as well as the one that you want to receive news and notifications from Pinterest. You will have to confirm this new email address in the same way that you did your original one, when you signed up.

  • Password — Click Change Your Password to open a new window, and then click in the respective boxes and type in your old password, a new password, and a repeat of your new password (to confirm it). Then click Change Password.

  • Language — Click this drop-down menu to select what language is displayed.

  • Country — Click this drop down menu to select what country you're from.  This may help you find people and content closer to home.

  • Gender — Click one of the buttons here to choose between "Male," "Female," or "Unspecified." This may help Pinterest find content that is more suited to your tastes when it displays pins on your main page, or when you search.

  • Search Privacy — Click to switch this setting to Yes if you don't want people to be able to find your profile by using common search engines, such as Google Search, Yahoo Search, or Bing.  (It may take some time for any actual changes to happen).

  • Personalization — These settings let Pinterest make recommendations for new content that you might like, based either on websites other than Pinterest that you visit, as well as when you look at content belonging to Pinterest's advertising partners.

If you don't want to be given recommendations in this way, click both buttons to set them to No.

  • Search History — Click Clear Search History to tell remove things that you've searched for previously in the search suggestions.

  • Account — Click Deactivate Account to close your account, either temporarily or permanently. If you need help with this, check out our tutorial on how to delete a Pinterest account for further instructions.

Profile

This lets you control how you appear to other users on Pinterest. You can change:

  • Name — Click in either box, and type to change your first or last name.

  • Picture — Click Change Picture, and then click Choose Picture to open up a file explorer window on your computer. Navigate to the picture that you want to use as your profile picture, click it to select it, and then click Open to set it as your profile picture.

  • Username — Click in this box and type in a new username between 3 and 15 characters long, without any spaces or special characters.  The only thing this will affect is the web address of your page.

  • AboutYou — Click in this box and type in a little about yourself, so Pinterest users have more than a name and a face to go off of!

  • Location — Click in this box and type in where you live, so that other people get an idea of where you are on the planet relative to them.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For privacy reasons, it's probably best if you limit this to a state/province and country, or a city at the most specific.  That is, don't write your full address in here; letting strangers know exactly where you live can be dangerous.  If you want, you can just leave this blank.

  • Website — If you have a personal website, you can type its web address into this box. Click Verify Website to confirm that the web address you provide doesn't lead to a website that scams people or infects their computers with viruses.

Notifications

These settings deal with letting you know when something happens involving you on Pinterest.  Here are the things you can set:

  • When You're On Pinterest — Click the appropriate button to choose whether you can receive notifications from anyone, or just people whom you follow.

  • Email — Click the button here to choose whether or not you receive notifications about things that happen on Pinterest concerning you by way of email. If you have this button set to No, you may still receive emails about any important privacy or policy changes.

If you have this button set to Yes, the buttons below will allow you to choose what kinds of notifications you receive via email, and (for some of them) how often you get them. Click the buttons to toggle and choose the appropriate options.

  • On Your Phone — Click Edit Push Notification Settings, and then click on the check boxes beside each type of notification to choose whether or not you will receive a notification about it if you have the Pinterest app for your mobile phone.

Social Media

This lets you connect your Pinterest account to other social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail.

Based on which social accounts you connect to, you may be able to find more people whom you know on Pinterest, or have your activity automatically posted to those accounts.

Click the button beside a social media website in the list to toggle it to Yes, then log into your account on that website (using the window that pops up) to link it to your Pinterest account.

Apps

This generally deals with what the Pinterest application for mobile devices are allowed to do, with respect to your account. If you don't have the app installed on any of your mobile devices (like a tablet computer or smart phone), there isn't really anything to worry about here.

When you're done making any changes to your settings, be sure to click Save Settings at the bottom of the screen.

Pinterest Save Settings button

To keep search engines from showing your Pinterest profile:

  1. Visit www.pinterest.com and sign in to your account.
  2. Click the profile icon in the top-right corner to go to your personal profile.
  3. Click the gear icon, and then click Account Settings.
  4. Switch the Search Privacy toggle from No to Yes.
  5. Click Save Settings to enable this feature.

And that's a quick primer on updating your Pinterest settings! It’s always good practice when you sign up for a service to review the default settings. You may be surprised what information a service deems appropriate to share by default. You should also make yourself aware of which aspects of the service you can customize to you; it can really enrich your experience on a website like Pinterest.

How to Search for Ideas on Pinterest

The pins you see when browsing through your main page on Pinterest are interesting and all, but sometimes they’re a little repetitive or not useful, and maybe you sometimes find you’re looking for something a little more specific. Fortunately, there are simple-to-use tools available to you that make it easy to find whatever strikes your fancy!

How to search on Pinterest

Pinterest employs a unique system called “guided search.” If you don’t find exactly what you’re looking for on your first try, your search terms are stored as keywords. From there, you can add/remove keywords (either your own or ones that Pinterest suggests) until you narrow down your search enough to find what you’re looking for.

  1. Go to www.pinterest.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. Click in the search bar next to Pinterest’s logo (it’ll say “Search”) and type in what you’re looking for.  As you do so, Pinterest will suggest keywords, boards, or users that match your search terms.

    Pinterest search bar

A suggestion with a picture beside it represents either a board or a user. If you click on one, it will take you directly to that board, or to that user’s main page.

A suggestion with nothing beside it is a keyword. Clicking it will take you to a results page, where you can further refine your search (more on this in the next step). You can also do this by pressing “Enter” on your keyboard to use your exact search terms as a keyword.

  3. If you click on a keyword or search for your exact search terms, a results page will appear. You can click the four buttons above the results to filter them by:

All Pins: all pins that contain your search terms

Your Pins: all pins on your boards only that contain your search terms

Pinners: all users on Pinterest whose names contain your search terms

Boards: all boards whose names contain your search terms

    Filter Pinterest search results

Now, look at the search bar itself.  Notice that your search terms have been turned into keywords (“shoes,” in this example). You can add more keywords to refine your search by clicking in the search bar, typing more terms in, and pressing the “Enter” key (or clicking a keyword suggestion in the drop-down menu that appears); or by clicking one of the suggestions directly below the search bar.

You can also remove an individual keyword by clicking the “X” beside it in the search bar, or remove all keywords at once and start a fresh search by clicking the “X” at the rightmost edge of the search bar.

When you add or remove keywords, Pinterest will update your results accordingly.

How to browse boards on Pinterest

Maybe you’re not looking for anything in particular, and just want to explore what Pinterest has to offer, in the hopes of discovering something neat. In that case, here’s what to do.

  1. Go to www.pinterest.com in your web browser and log in (if you haven’t already).

  2. Click the categories button () next to the search bar, and click on a category that you want to browse.

    Pinterest categories

  3. You will now see pins that have recently been added to boards on Pinterest designated with that category. Click one of the suggestions under “Related Interests” to continue browsing.

Recently added pins in Pinterest categories

  4. This will show you recently added pins that contain the term(s) you chose, or whose board name contains the term(s) you chose. You can click Follow to have these kinds of pins show up on your main page, and you can also see who has followed this topic recently (click on their picture to go to their main page).

    Recent Pinterest followers by topic

Again, you can click on one of the suggestions under “Related Interests” to narrow the topic you want to look for, or to look for something else similar.

That’s pretty much all there is to searching and browsing for things you actually want to see on Pinterest! It’s that easy, and can be such a great resource to you for finding inspiration about the things you really care about. If you want to learn more about all of the site’s great features, take a look at our other step-by-step tutorials in the rest of our Pinterest course. How to Delete Pins and Boards on Pinterest

Don't need a pin or a board on Pinterest anymore? Maybe a pin doesn't work anymore, or you don't like it, or you don't feel that it fits with the theme of your board. Or maybe you made a board for a specific purpose (like planning some sort of event), and now that it has served its role, it's just taking up space. Whatever the reason, here's how to delete a pin or board on Pinterest.

To delete pins on Pinterest

1.Go to Pinterest.com and log in.

2. Click your name to view your page.

Personal Pinterest page

3. Click Boards, then click the board that you want to remove a pin from (but NOT the Edit button).

Pinterest board

4. Click on the edit button ( ) in the top-right corner of the pin you want removed.

Edit Pinterest board

5. Click Delete Pin (and confirm).

To delete multiple pins at once

6. Repeat steps 1 through 3 in the above section (if necessary) to get to the board that you want to delete pins from. Then start by clicking Move Pins.

7. Now, clicking on one of your pins will select or deselect it; you can tell by whether or not the checkmark in the top-right corner of the pin is highlighted in red or not.  Select which pins you wish to delete, and then click Delete. (You will need to confirm that you wish to do this).

To delete a board on Pinterest

1. View the Boards section of your personal page, and click Edit below the board that you want deleted.

2. In the bottom-left corner, click Delete Board (and confirm).

3. You can also delete the board by clicking on it to open it, and clicking Edit Board.

4. From here, the process is the same as step 2 in this section.

Remember that deleting a board will also delete all pins on it, and you can't recover a pin or board once you delete it. So think carefully before you decide that you really want to delete a pin or board!

Note, however, that if anyone "re-pins" a pin that you created from a website or a file on your computer, deleting your copy of it won't delete anyone else's copy.  The same is true if you choose to delete your copy of a pin that was "re-pinned" from somewhere else. This means that if you want to re-create one of these pins, all you may have to do is just find it again and "Pin It"!

Anyway, those are some different ways of deleting your pins or boards on Pinterest, if you so choose! To learn more about boards and using the website, be sure to check out our step-by-step tutorials on how to use Pinterest boards and how to pin on Pinterest.

How to Pin on Pinterest

Okay, so you’ve created a board or two on Pinterest to store and organize things you find. The next step, then, is to get out there and find content with which to fill up your boards! The actual pieces of content on Pinterest are referred to as “pins,” and they can be pictures, videos, animations, Internet links, and more.

There are three general ways to add pins to your boards on Pinterest:

  1. Add a pin directly from the board that you want to add it to, either by entering a web address or uploading a file from your own computer.

  2. Copy a pin that already exists on the Pinterest website.

  3. Create a pin from another website that supports creating Pinterest pins from its content.

How to add a pin from a board

  1. Go to www.pinterest.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. Click your name in the top-right corner to go to your personal page.

    Personal Pinterest page

  3. Click on Boards to see your collection of boards, and then click on the board that you want to add a pin to (but NOT on the Edit button).

    Your Pinterest boards

  4. Click Add a Pin and then choose whether you want to add it from The Web or Your Device (i.e. your computer).

Add a pin to your boards

  5. If you chose to add a pin from a web page on the Internet, the first step is to add its web address (for example, “https://techboomers.com/p/pinterest” is a web address).  Click in the box highlighted in the screenshot below and type in the web page’s address (or just copy and paste it from the address bar once you’re on that specific page).  Then click Next.

Add web address to add a Pinterest pin

  6. Since Pinterest is a visual-based website, you will need to select a picture on the web page that you’re trying to pin, in order to represent that web page.  Pinterest will automatically pull all image files that it can find off the page that you’re trying to pin; just move your mouse cursor over the one that you want to use to represent the web page, and click Pin It.

  7. Now, you’ll need to select which board you want to add this pin to, and maybe also give it a bit of a description so that people will know what you’ve found. Click the drop-down menu beside “Board” and select the name of the board that you want to add this pin to.  If you have multiple boards and want to find one quickly, click in the box labelled “Find or Create a Board” and type in the name of the board that you’re looking for. You can also click the Create button to create a new board to add that pin to, right on the spot.

    Add a Pinterest pin

Once you’re done that, you can click in the box beside “Description” and type in a bit of information about the content of this pin (but this is totally optional).  When you’re all set, click Pin It.  Presto!  Your pin is created and added to the board that you chose!

  8. If you choose to add a pin from something on your own computer, you will first need to select a picture to represent the pin.  Click Choose Image to display a window that will let you browse your computer’s files.  Find the picture that you want to use to represent this pin, click on it to select it, and then click Open.

    Add image to Pinterest board

  9. Now, like when you added a pin through a web page, you’ll need to select which board you want to add this pin to, and add a description so that people will know what you’ve found. When you’re all set, click Pin It.  Congrats!  You’ve created your very own pin, right from scratch!

How to copy a pin from somewhere else on Pinterest

An easy way to add pins to your Pinterest boards is to just add some that other people have already put on Pinterest! To do it:

  1. Go to www.pinterest.com in your web browser and log in (if you haven’t already).

  2. Find a pin on either your main page, or by searching for one, and click Pin It in the top-left corner.

    Add pins from other boards

  3. As with adding pins through other methods, you’ll need to select a board to add the pin to, and give it an optional description.  When you’re done, click Pin It.  It’s as easy as that!

How to create a pin from a website that features Pinterest support

There are certain websites where you will be able to create pins on Pinterest directly from their content.  Just look for the Pin It button next to a recipe, news story, illustration, or anything else, and click it.

You can also turn videos on popular video-sharing websites such as YouTube, Vimeo, and TED.com into pins.

To turn a YouTube video into a pin, go to its page, click on Share, and then click the Pinterest logo.

Pin Youtube video

For videos on Vimeo, the process is much the same, except the Share button is directly on the video.

Pin Vimeo videos

For videos on Ted.com, go to the video’s page, move your mouse cursor over the “more” icon () next to “Share This Idea” and click Pinterest.

Pin Ted.com videos

In any of these cases, you will be asked to log into Pinterest, if you aren’t already.  From there, the process is the same as it is for adding other types of pins: pick a board to add the pin to, write a description, and then click Pin It.  Done!

Pinterest Boards

Depending on how much you know about Pinterest and how it works, you may be wondering what “Boards” are and how they will enrich your experience using the website. If you’re ready to start building your own board, we’ll want to help! We’ll explain what Pinterest boards are, and teach you how to create and follow boards. To get started, what is a board on Pinterest?

A Pinterest board is a way you store and organize visual bookmarks called “pins.” When you find pins that are related to each other, for example, all about baking and recipes, you can collect them together on one board. You can create group boards to share with friends, and secret boards for yourself.

Chances are, as you keep using Pinterest, you will find pins that often relate to the same kinds of things you are interested in, whether that’s travel, animals, sports, exercise, or anything else. To stay organized, create as many boards as you need to, and then share them with your friends. If there is something you’re working on that you don’t want others to see (such as a vacation you’re thinking of taking or a surprise party you’re planning, you can make your boards private.

How to make a board on Pinterest

  1. Visit www.pinterest.com in your favorite Internet browser, and sign into your account.

  3. Click Boards, and then click Create a Board.
  4. Click in the grey box, and choose a personalized name.
