How to Watch Hulu on TV

Can I watch Hulu on TV?

There are certain ways that you can watch Hulu on your television screen instead of your desktop computer monitor.  The most basic one is to use cables to connect your computer's video and sound systems to your TV.

However, some advanced TVs can use applications right on them, and Hulu is one of them.  You can also use Hulu through certain Blu-Ray players, digital media players (such as Apple TV or Google Chromecast), or video game consoles (such as Sony's PlayStation 4, Microsoft's Xbox One, or Nintendo's Wii U).

Note that using any other option besides connecting your computer to your TV will require you to have a Hulu Plus account.  See our How Much Does Hulu Cost article for more information about Hulu Plus.

How to watch Hulu on TV

Connecting a computer's video and sound

The easiest way to connect your computer to your TV in order to watch Hulu is by using a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cable.  You can get them at your local computer or electronics store for as little as $40.  The ends will look like this:

HDMI cable for connecting computer to watch Hulu on TV

One end of the cable will plug into a port on your computer labelled "HDMI", like so:

HDMI cable plugging into computer to watch Hulu on TV

The other end will plug into a port on your TV labelled "HDMI", which looks like this:

HDMI ports to connect computer to for watching Hulu on TV

Once you do so, you'll need to switch the source feed on your TV to the HDMI slot that you plugged your computer into.  Look for a button on your remote or TV that says "Source" or "Input" and press it until you select "HDMI" and your computer desktop appears on the screen.  In some cases, your TV may have more than one HDMI port, so if this doesn't work with one of them, then try the other one.

If your TV doesn't have HDMI capabilities, then you will need to connect your computer's video and sound separately.  You can connect the video by using a VGA, S-Video, Composite Video, or DVI cable.  The associated ports for those cables look like this (so you can figure out what the cables look like):

VGA port to connect computer to for watchin Hulu on TV   S-video port to connect computer to for watchin Hulu on TV  Composite video port to connect computer to for watchin Hulu on TV  DVI port to connect computer to for watchin Hulu on TV

Along with one of these, you'll also need an audio cable (or set of cables) that look like this:

Audio cable to connect computer to watch Hulu on TV

Once you get both the video and audio cables connected, you will still need to change the source feed for your TV, just like you would have had to do if your TV had HDMI capabilities.  This time, though, you'll want to switch your TV's source feed to "AV" or "Computer/CPU" instead of "HDMI".

From there, use your computer to control Hulu as normal, and watch shows on your TV's big screen!

Using a smart TV or other connected media device

There are over 25 different devices (besides desktop computers) that can be used to watch Hulu on TV. Therefore, it's difficult to provide a summary of how to use them all in a short article like this one, since many devices are slightly different.

Some general directions can be found by clicking this link.

For a full list of devices (besides desktop computers) that can use Hulu, click this link.

In the meantime, here are links for specific instructions for some popular devices that can let you watch Hulu on your TV:

How to Watch Hulu on a Computer

The most common way to watch Hulu is right on the website with your desktop computer.  This tutorial will go over how to do so by finding a show to watch, and then controlling the Hulu video player.

How to watch Hulu on your computer

  1. Go to www.hulu.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. Browse or search for a show or movie that you want to watch, and click on it to start watching it.

Hulu select movie or show to watch on computer

  3. Note that if you select to watch a television show, you may have to select a specific episode.  Scroll to the “Episodes” section and click one that you wish to watch.

Hulu select episode of show to watch on computer

  4. Here’s a look at the Hulu video player.  Note that you need to have the Adobe Flash Player program installed and active in order for it to work.  If you need to install this program (or aren’t sure if you have it installed), click here to learn how to do it.

The main controls are on the bar we’ve highlighted at the bottom of the screenshot. From left to right, you can:

    – play or pause the video
    – rewind 10 seconds
    – view the next episode or movie in sequence
    – skip to a particular point in the video
    – adjust or mute/unmute the volume
    – access advanced settings (like video quality, closed captions, or auto-play for the next video)
    – enter or exit full screen mode

You’ll notice that there are also some buttons in the top-right corner of the screen. Click either of these to log into your Facebook or Twitter accounts (respectively, from left to right) and post a message to let your friends and family know what you’re watching on Hulu!

That’s how to watch Hulu shows on your computer in a nutshell!  If you’d like to watch Hulu somewhere other than on your desktop computer, we’ll have some information on that in our next tutorial for how to watch Hulu on TV.
