The Match.com Guarantee

As the most popular dating service on the Internet, Match is confident that it will help you find your special someone. In fact, they guarantee that if you haven't found a suitable match within your first six months of using the website, the next six months of using the website won't cost you a dime!

Sounds like a pretty good deal, right? Well, as the saying goes, "if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Match.com's guarantee means that they're potentially giving away their paid service for free, so they're very strict when it comes to what you need to do to be eligible for that guarantee.

Match.com Guarantee rules

As you will see in the pop-up window of information below about the guarantee, there are already a few rules that you have to follow in order to qualify for it.

Match subscription plans

The very first paid subscription that you choose MUST be for 6 months (bundle or basic). Choosing any other plan first (even if it would add up to 6 months eventually, like six 1-month instalments or two 3-month instalments) will automatically make you ineligible for the guarantee, even if you choose to switch to a 6-month plan later.

During the initial 6-month period, you have to create a profile that is truthful (remember, it now runs background checks on its users for security reasons, so they'll know if someone's running a scam), includes at least one main photo of yourself (that is approved within the first week of your subscription), and is kept publicly visible at all times.

During each month of the initial 6-month period, you have to use Match.com's email system to communicate with at least 5 people whom you haven't communicated with already. This means that you have to have had contact with at least 30 different people over the course of 6 months via its email system. Of course, it never hurts to communicate with a few extra people to make sure that you're meeting the eligibility requirements.

Also note that winks, phone calls, or instant messages don't count; only emails do. And they have to use Match's email system; they can't be to or from an outside email account.

Redeeming the Guarantee

There is one other major thing to mention about this guarantee. Even if you maintain your eligibility for it the whole way through, Match won't (or can't) automatically assume that you want to redeem the free 6-month extension once your initial 6-month subscription runs out. These two paragraphs of "the fine print" shown here spell this out:

Match.com Guarantee fine print

Basically, what this says is that if you are initially eligible for the guarantee (by making your first subscription for 6 months), you get an extra page on your account that will let you see if you are still eligible for the guarantee or not, and what you need to do to keep yourself eligible.

Now, here's the really important part about this "Guarantee Eligibility Progress" page: if you're still eligible for the guarantee during the last week of your initial 6-month subscription, you MUST go to this page, tell Match that you haven't found your "special someone," and tell them that you wish to redeem the guarantee for a free 6-month extension of their service.

The sooner you do this, the better. As we mentioned in our article on how much Match.com costs, Match is a very large and popular website, so it will take time for their customer service team to process any requests related to subscriptions and billing.

This is the part that a lot of disgruntled former users missed when they tried to get the free 6 months. They assumed that they would automatically give them the guaranteed extra time if they fulfilled all of the eligibility requirements, or they waited until it was too late to explicitly tell Match that they wanted to redeem the guarantee. Instead, what happened was that Match assumed that they didn't want to redeem the guarantee, and instead just renewed their 6-month subscription and billed them for it as usual.

Again,  vigilance and being proactive are crucial when it comes to making sure that you don't pay for more than what you're using or being offered. Know when your subscription starts and ends, check your "Guarantee Eligibility Progress" page to make sure that you're following the rules, and give its customer service team as much notice as you can when confirming that you want to redeem the guarantee.

Match.com Review

Now that you know a bit about Match.com, you're probably wondering: "is it the right dating service for me?" Fear not; we'll go over the pros and cons of the website so that you get an idea of what to expect from it (and what you shouldn't expect from it).

Pros

There has to be somebody right for you — Match is the largest dating website in the world in terms of sheer volume of users, so you're almost certain to meet at least a few people whom you're interested in. The easy-to-use search functions help with this.

Troublemakers need not apply — The website recently instituted a policy of performing background checks on people who sign up, so there is a much lower chance that you'll meet someone who is just running a scam or is actually dangerous. The fact that you have to pay to use the service helps with this, too.

"Stir" events get you dating for real — The website has features and events that make it easy to get out from behind the computer and meet up with your matches — or just anyone whom you might be interested in — face-to-face in the real world.

Your "special someone" is guaranteed — If you initially sign up for a 6-month subscription and don't find anyone whom you really click with during that time, you can use the website for another 6 months for free!

Cons

Be prepared to do some legwork — While the website's search options are easy to use, Match isn't as thorough as some other dating websites when it comes to helping you find and communicate with matches. It's up to you to look into people whom you might be interested in and see if they're worth contacting or not. It's also up to you and your matches as to how frequently and in what ways you want to contact each other.

Love is pricey — While there is a free membership option, most of the website's more useful features are unavailable unless you sign up for a paid subscription. And these subscriptions are expensive, costing between $15 and $25 a month, depending on which plan you choose.

Beware the red tape — The most common complaint about this website is that there are a lot of hidden or otherwise unclear "gotchas" concerning paying for subscriptions or redeeming the 6-month guarantee. For example, Match automatically renews whatever subscription you have when it expires, so if you want to change your plan or cancel your account, you have to contact them well in advance to avoid getting billed for a service that you aren't using. Also, you have to have a certain level of activity on your account and explicitly tell Match before the 6-month guarantee has expired that you want to redeem it, in order to avoid just renewing a paid 6-month subscription.

The Bottom Line: 7.5/10

Match.com is definitely a website where you get out what you put in. With its large user base, easy-to-use search and communication tools, and events for meeting up with people in real life, it's a great way to find a large number of possible dates and partners in a short amount of time. The downside is that it comes with a pretty steep cost, in terms of not only how much money you have to pay to keep your membership going, but also the amount of work that you have to do to get the most out of the website and its features.

The key to using this website is to be proactive in everything that you do. If you like it, use as many of its features as you can, as often as you can, in order to make sure that you're getting your money's worth. If you don't like it, make sure you decide that early on, and act quickly to get out before you get stuck paying for a subscription that you're not using.

If you think Match is a good fit for you, check out our next tutorial on how to sign up for Match. If you’re still unsure, you can read more details in the other articles of our free Match.com course before you commit to making an account.

When is Match.com Free and How Much Can It Cost?

There aren't many ways to sugar-coat it: Match is a dating service that's a little on the pricey side, but it may be worth it if you find that special someone. So in this tutorial, we're going to go over how to make sure that you get your money's worth out of it.

Is Match.com free?

Signing up for Match.com is free, but most of its more useful features will be locked unless you have a paid subscription. In order to get the most out of the service, and to access all of the great features of the site, we would recommend choosing one of the paid membership options. We’ll go over each plan below.

Match.com subscription benefits

As you can see in the chart above, for example, a free membership allows you to:

  • Create a profile
  • Search for matches
  • Sign up for real-life dating events
  • See if anyone is interested in you or likes your profile or photos
  • See if anyone has sent you an email or "Wink"

However, without a paid subscription, you can't do any of the following:

  • Read or send any emails to anyone
  • Make secure phone calls to anyone
  • Chat with anyone using instant messaging
  • View the profiles of anyone who's interested in you

So, if you're really interested in using Match and making the website work for you, then consider getting a paid subscription.

Bundle plans

Bundle plans are a little more expensive, but they give you a couple of extra features.

  • Email Read Notification – This will send you an alert whenever one of your matches reads an email from you for the first time.

  • First Impressions – This adds extra priority to your profile so that it is more likely to show up as a match for people who are new to Match.com.

  • Highlighted Profile – This just adds some extra colour to your profile so that it's more noticeable in lists.

Match.com bundle plans

As you can see here, your pricing options for bundle plans are:

  • 3 months at $25.99 per month ($78.97 total)
  • 6 months at $21.99 per month ($131.94 total)
  • 12 months at $19.99 per month ($239.88 total)

Basic plans

Basic plans don't offer the extra features that bundle plans do, but they're a bit less expensive.

Match.com basic plans

As you can see here, your pricing options for basic plans are:

  • 3 months at $21.99 per month ($65.97 total)
  • 6 months at $19.99 per month ($119.94 total)
  • 12 months at $18.99 per month ($227.88 total)

If you don't think you're going to be using Match for very long (or much longer, if you've been using it for a while), then there is also the option to get a basic subscription for one month. However, at $39.99, it's the priciest option in terms of money-to-time.

[4] Credit Card Security Code — Click here and type in your credit card's security code.  It's usually only 3 or 4 digits long, and usually appears on the back of your card.  Move your mouse cursor over the little question mark button here to get help on where to look.

[8] Continue — Click here once you've entered all of your information.

The next page you'll see is just a confirmation of your subscription purchase. Congratulations! You now have a free 7-day trial that lets you communicate with your matches to your heart's content! Just make sure to cancel it before it expires, or else you'll have to pay for the subscription plan that you chose!

Match.com Guarantee

If you purchase a paid subscription and are not able to find a good match within the first 6 months of having a paid membership, Match will give you 6 months of their premium service for free. Check out our article about Match.com’s guarantee to learn more about the details, rules and regulations.

Avoiding Automatic Subscription Renewal Pitfalls

Now, you may have noticed that we put the total cost of each subscription plan (minus taxes, interest, etc.) next to its monthly rate. There is a very good reason for this:

YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THE FULL DURATION OF ANY SUBSCIRPTION PLAN ON MATCH.COM, EVEN IF YOU CHANGE OR CANCEL IT.

Even if you change or cancel your subscription while in the middle of it, you still have to pay for the remainder of that subscription. You won't be given a refund for the time you don't use, or plan on using under a different subscription type. The reason we mention this has to do with one of the most common complaints that former users have about the website:

MATCH AUTOMATICALLY RENEWS YOUR CURRENT SUBSCRIPTION PLAN AFTER IT EXPIRES, UNLESS YOU CHANGE OR CANCEL IT.

Once your plan is done, the service automatically gives you a new one of the same type, and you have to pay for all of it unless you've changed or cancelled it well in advance. They even say so on the page where you select your subscription:

Match.com billing terms

These two points, taken together, mean that you have to be VERY careful with when you decide to change or cancel your subscription. If you aren't, then you can get stuck having to pay for and use up a whole other instalment of your previous type of subscription before you can start the new type of subscription that you changed it to. Or worse, if you decide to stop using Match, you can get stuck paying for a subscription to a service that you aren't even using anymore!

The moral of the story is to be both vigilant and proactive when it comes to paid subscriptions and billing. Know when your subscription starts and ends, and if you get the urge to change or cancel it, make sure that you do so well in advance of your subscription's expiry date.

Match is a very large and popular website (as we have mentioned), and so it will take time for its customer service team to find all of your necessary information and process any changes. So make sure to give them plenty of notice when you want to change or cancel your subscription in order to avoid getting locked into a deal that you want no part of.

That’s all the information you need to know about how much Match costs!

Is Match.com Safe, Legit, and Worth It?

Coffee shop date

Now that we’ve shared with you what Match.com is and how it works, your next thought might be whether or not Match is safe to use. In this article, we’ll cover all the information you need to know about the safety and legitimacy of the service, and whether it’s worth paying for.

Is Match.com safe?

Yes, Match.com is safe to use for online dating. The service runs background checks to weed out those people that shouldn’t be using their services. As long as you’re careful not to reveal too much information, and don’t meet anyone in person unless you trust them, you’ll be just fine.

Is Match.com legit?

Yes, Match is definitely legitimate. Match has been around since 1993, making it one of the oldest and most well-established online dating services available. Millions of people like you have used Match and successfully started long-term relationships – maybe you’ll be next!

Is Match.com worth it?

If you’re serious about trying to find love online, then purchasing a paid subscription may be worth it for you. Paying for a premium membership subscription gives you access to all the additional features of the website and will give you a better online dating experience overall.

If you’re serious about finding love with online dating, Match is a proven resource, but you will need to pay. You simply need to decide if you’re ready for a serious commitment, or if you’d rather take your chances with free dating apps that don’t make as many compatible matches.

4 Match safety tips

1. Be cautious about what information you put on your public profile.

Your profile is visible to other Match users, so be careful what personal information you reveal. Don’t post anything about your finances, your home address, etc. that could allow someone with bad intentions to steal your information.

2. Get to know your matches before going on a date with them.

You shouldn’t meet up with anyone you meet on Match without really getting to know them first. Take things slowly and talk to your matches before agreeing to meet them in person.

3. If one of your matches behaves suspiciously, cut off contact with them and report them.

Nobody should be asking for your personal or financial information. If someone asks for this type of information, or is bothering you with unwanted messages, cut off contact with them and report them to Match.

4. Let a friend know where you’re going when you meet one of your matches for the first time.

Cell phone in hand

Just in case something happens to go wrong, you should always make sure someone you know is aware of where you are and who you’re with when you meet someone from Match in person for the first time. Request that your first few dates be in public places, so you won’t be alone with someone you don’t know very well.

What Match.com is and How to Find Love Online

Dating these days seems to have become much more challenging. When dating online, it can be difficult to figure out who is a good match for you, or determine whether you’ll be compatible with someone you meet online. Some dating sites and apps leave this all up to the users themselves, and don’t really give any guidance to help them find people they’ll be interested in. We understand how frustrating this can be.

If you’re struggling with online dating, what would you say if there was a dating website that will give you new matches every day that actually have things in common with you? Sounds great, right? Are you interested in finding someone you could have a long-term connection with? If so, Match.com may be the right place for you to start. In this article, we’ll tell you all about what Match is, how it works, and give you some more background information about their services so you can decide if it’s right for you.

Let's start with the basics: What is Match.com?

Match.com is the world's most popular Internet dating service. Millions of people use Match, so you’ll find someone who is right for you. They focus on building relationships between people who are compatible with one another. It is available in over 245 countries worldwide, and in 8 languages.

How does Match.com work?

Match works by matching you with other users based on the information you provide in your profile. The service will give you new, personalized matches every day, and you can use the search tools to find people you’re interested in. After finding someone who interests you, you can send a message and get to know them.

Why Use Match for Online Dating?

The main reason to use Match as a dating service is its massive popularity. The sheer number of users on the website means that you’ll almost never run out of interesting people to meet! They also perform background checks on people who sign up for the site, so many potentially dangerous people are weeded out.

So, what if you find someone on Match who interests you, and you want to hang out with them in real life? It has a service known as "Stir" that can give you some ideas for date activities in your local area. Or, if you don't have a date and just want to meet some people who are into the same types of pastimes that you are, that's fine, too. You can even bring your friends!

Match Stir

Match is so confident that you'll meet someone whom you really click with on their website that they offer the Match.com Guarantee. If you sign up for a 6-month membership and don't find a special someone within that time, you can use the website for another 6 months for free!

5 steps to using Match to find love

1. Create an account and fill in your profile.

Your first step will be to create an account and profile. Your account information will help keep you secure on the website, as well as help Match find people of the gender, age range, and geographical area that you're looking for.

Register for a Match.com account

Your profile information, on the other hand, helps the service determine in detail who you are and what you're looking for in a date, from physical features to hobbies to political/religious beliefs.

2. Sign up for a Match subscription to get more features.

A free membership only allows you to look around for people whom you might be interested in. If you want to see who's interested in you, or communicate with them in any way, you'll have to purchase a paid subscription. Match offers different subscription packages that vary in terms of the features that you get, the amount of time that they last, and how much they cost.

Match.com bundle plans

For more information about subscriptions on Match, see our article on how much Match.com costs.

3. Browse your matches and search for people that interest you.

Once you have all of the administrative stuff out of the way, it's time to find out whom you might be interested in, or who might be interested in you. There are a few different ways to do this.

  1. Based on the info about both yourself and what you're looking for in a date (as well as what's in other people's profiles), you will be sent a certain number of potential matches per day. You can review them and decide who strikes your fancy and who just doesn't seem like a good fit.

    Match.com daily matches

  2. If your recommendations aren't giving you what you want, you can also search for matches manually. You can pick all of the search criteria yourself, or you can let Match make things easy by showing the people within your basic search criteria who have the most traits that you're looking for, and/or are looking for most of the traits that you have. You can even search for matches based on what brands or organizations you both like.

    Search for matches

  3. Finally, you can also look for matches by directly using the service's matching program, Synapse. Synapse allows you to input previous matches that it has found for you based on what's in your profile (both information and preferences), whom you've interacted with (like sending Winks or likes, or saying you are or aren't interested), and how you generally use the tools on to communicate or match yourself with people. Select up to three matches, and then click Match Me to see who else you can find!

4. Communicate with your matches to get to know them and see if you’re compatible.

Why just look when you can connect? The service offers three convenient ways to get in touch with people who interest you, or who are interested in you.

You can send them a "wink" if you're shy and need an easy way to break the ice.

Send a wink to a Match.com user

Or you can send an email if you have your thoughts together, and want to start a personalized conversation about something specific.

Or if you're not afraid of a little spontaneity, you can start a private chat with someone, and see where the conversation goes!

5. Sign up for real-life dating events.

If you're looking for an idea as to what would be a great date to take one of your matches out on, or just want to get out from behind the computer and into the real world to have some fun and meet people who are into what you like, give Match's "Stir" feature a try.

Every so often, Stir puts on dating events, which it then recommends to you based on where you live and what your interests are. You can sign up for these events even if you only have a free membership, and you can even bring your friends along, too!

Is the dating service safe to use?

Yes, Match is safe to use. It runs background checks on users so that potentially harmful people are removed from the site for the safety of others. However, you should still be cautious when dating online. Be careful how much personal information you reveal, and never meet someone in person unless you’re ready.

When is Match free?

Match is free to sign up for, but to get the full experience you’ll need to purchase a paid subscription. With a free Match membership, you will have limited to no options for viewing and searching for matches, as well as communication. Paying for a premium membership is worth it if you really want to meet someone.

The history of Match

Since its founding in 1993, Match has expanded its availability to over 245 different countries and 8 different languages, with regional offices in the U.S., Brazil, Japan, and China. When it was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2004, Match had over 15 million users with active profiles.

Now, Match is the number one most popular online dating service, with more than 25 million monthly users. It has been around for over 20 years, and is one of the most well-established websites of its kind.

Pros and cons of Match

Some great things about Match are that it has a huge number of active users so you’ll be sure to find some great matches you could potentially have a connection with. Also, it will send you a new set of matches every day, so you’re sure to eventually find someone who interests you. On top of that, with the Match guarantee, if you don’t find someone within 6 months of getting a paid subscription, you’ll be able to use the service for another 6 months for free.

On the negative side, Match is not entirely free to use. You have to pay for a subscription if you want to access additional features, and be able to get in touch with your matches. Also, some people might prefer to determine compatibility for themselves, but the service recommends users who they think you’ll be interested in.

Match competitors

If Match isn’t right for you, there are lots of other online dating websites and apps you can try out instead. One of Match’s biggest competitors is eHarmony.com – another well-established dating site with a focus on serious relationships. Another great dating site is OkCupid, which is a good option if you’re looking for a free dating site to try out. If you’re looking for a more casual relationship or want to determine compatibility yourself, you can give Tinder a try – it’s free to use as well!
