If you have a traditional voicemail service rather than the more modern visual voicemail, you’ll need to call in to listen to your messages. Next, we’ll give you a little more information about the controls for traditional voicemail service on various carriers.

Traditional voicemail on iPhone

Here is a chart explaining some of the basic controls of a traditional voicemail inbox on a variety of carriers based in the U.S. and Canada.

Carrier Save Message Delete Message Repeat Message
T-Mobile Press 9 Press 7 Press 1
Verizon Press 9 Press 7 Press 4
AT&T Press 3 Press 2 Press 1
Rogers Press 9 Press 7 Enter "11"
Bell Press 9 Press 7 Press 4
Telus Press 9 Press 7 Press 1
Virgin Mobile Press 3 Press 2 Press 1

Those are the controls for voicemail service of various popular carriers in the U.S. and Canada. There are, however, a couple of other things you should know about voicemail on iOS that you should keep in mind when checking and responding to messages, so we’ll cover those things now.

Notes on checking voicemail messages

1. If you don’t delete it from your inbox, a voicemail will be automatically erased after a period of time.

Even if you don’t erase it from your inbox, unless you save a voicemail message it will be automatically deleted after a certain amount of time. Most mobile service providers leave voicemail messages in your inbox for 30 days, but this time period can vary from one provider to another. Check with your service provider to see how long your messages can be kept.

2. You need caller ID to be able to use the “Call Back” feature.

If you don’t have caller ID as part of your monthly phone plan, you likely will not be able to see the phone numbers of people leaving you voicemail messages, and as such you will not be able to tap the Call Back button. This feature only works when the caller’s phone number is visible.

3. If you have a traditional voicemail service, call in to listen to your messages.

Though we included a table above with basic controls for various traditional voicemail services, we thought we should clarify this: If you don’t have visual voicemail included in your phone plan, you won’t see a list of your messages when you select the Voicemail tab on the Phone app. Instead, when you tap the Voicemail icon, you will see that your phone is dialing your voicemail inbox. From there, you’ll be able to listen to any messages you have. Follow the instructions for your specific carrier when the command options are presented to you by the automated greeting.

Notes on recording a new voicemail greeting

1. Before you start recording a new greeting, make sure you’re in a good place to create an audio recording.

To ensure that your greeting sounds as good as it possibly can, make sure you’re in a good place to record it. Wind, fans, and other background noise can affect the quality of your recording. Try to get to a quiet room where you can record your outgoing message without any interference.

2. To make sure your new greeting was set up properly, try calling yourself on a different phone to check it out.

Call your phone number from a different phone and listen to your new message to make sure it was all set up properly. This will allow you to see what your recording sounds like to others.

3. Remember that you can change up your voicemail greeting at any time.

If you ever get tired of your outgoing message, you can change it if you like. Using the instructions above, you can change it up whenever you’d like.

Notes on setting up voicemail on iPhone

1. Get in touch with your mobile carrier to ensure voicemail is included in your plan.

Before you attempt to go through the process of setting up voicemail on your iPhone, call your mobile service provider to make sure that you have the service included in your monthly cell phone plan. Some providers do charge extra for it, so if you don’t already have the service included in your plan, be prepared to pay a little extra every month should you decide to add the service to your plan.

2. If you have trouble getting your voicemail set up, give your mobile carrier a call.

If you know you have the service included in your cell phone plan, but are having some trouble getting your inbox set up on your phone, we’d recommend calling your mobile service provider. They may be able to answer your question or help you solve the issue you’re having.

3. From another phone, call your own phone number to ensure your voicemail was set up properly.

Once you’re finished going through all the steps to get your inbox set up on your phone, we would recommend using another phone to call your own number, and leaving a voice message for yourself. This way, you can make sure that your greeting and inbox have been properly set up.
