How to Reset Your PayPal Password

PayPal is full of important personal and financial information that makes it easier to shop and send money online, so you should probably do the best that you can to remember the password to your account.  In the event that you can’t, though, here’s how to get back into your account.

To reset your PayPal password:

  1. Go to www.paypal.com and click Log In.
  2. Click Forgot Your Email or Password?
  3. Type in your email address, and complete the security check.
  4. Select a primary account verification method.
  5. Verify your account.
  6. Select a secondary account verification method.
  7. Verify your account again.
  8. Choose a new password.

As we’ve said before, PayPal needs to stay secure to protect its users’ sensitive information, so the process for resetting your password is a bit lengthy.  However, this makes it difficult for cyber-thieves to arbitrarily reset other people’s passwords, break into their accounts, and steal their identity and financial information.  Below is what the entire operation looks like, from start to finish.

Detailed instructions for what to do if you forgot your PayPal password

1. Attempt to log into PayPal.

Go to www.paypal.com and click Log In in the top-right corner.

2. Request to reset your password.

When the log in screen appears, click Forgot Your Email or Password?

3. Enter your email address, and pass the security check.

Click in the box labelled “Email Address” and type in the email address that you used to sign up for PayPal.   Then, click in the box labelled “Enter the Code” and type in the distorted numbers and letters that you see in the graphic above the box.  Then click Continue.

4. Select a method for verifying your PayPal account.

You will have to verify your account before you can reset your password.  Click the drop-down menu labelled Select a Verification Method and select one of the options.  For the purposes of this tutorial, we’ll select email.  Then click Continue.

5. Enter the verification code.

Go to your email client and log in.  Find the email from PayPal titled “Verification Code to Reset PayPal Password” and click on it to open it.  Find the verification number written inside, and then switch back to the screen below.  Click in the box labelled “Verification Code” and type in the number.  Then click Continue.

(NOTE: If you can’t find the email from PayPal, click Send It Again.)

6. Select a second method for verifying your PayPal account.

You will have to verify your PayPal account one more time before you can reset your password.  Click the drop-down menu labelled Select a Secondary Verification Method and choose one of the remaining options.  This time, we’ll select an automated phone call.  Then click Continue.

7. Enter the second verification code.

You will receive a phone call at the number that you entered when you signed up for PayPal.  Answer it, and when you are asked to do so, use your phone’s dial pad to enter the four numbers shown on the current screen (though not the numbers shown in the screenshot below; yours will likely be different).  After doing so, click the check box to mark it and tell PayPal that you have verified your account by phone.  Lastly, click Continue.

8. Enter a new password.

Finally, you will have to pick a new password to protect your PayPal account with.

Click in the box labelled “Enter a New Password” and type in the password that you would like to use from now on to secure your PayPal account.  Then, click in the box labelled “Confirm Your New Password” and type in a copy of the new password that you just picked.  Finish up by clicking Continue.

How to Change Your PayPal Password

PayPal is a tool that manages your financial information when you shop or transfer money online, so you don’t have to give it to every website that requires you to pay money for something.  While this increases your online security and privacy a bit, it still makes you vulnerable if your PayPal account itself isn’t well protected.  If you need to give your PayPal account a stronger password — or at least a fresh one — here’s what to do.

By the way, we have some tips on how to beef up your online passwords in our How to Make a Strong Password tutorial.

To change your PayPal password:

  1. Go to www.paypal.com and log in.
  2. Click the gear icon to access your PayPal profile and settings.
  3. Click the Security tab, and then click Edit beside “Password”.
  4. Type in your current password, a new password, and a copy of your new password, and then click Change Password.

It’s not all that hard to do, but all the same, we’ll show you what the process looks like in action below.

3. Access your “Security” settings, and submit a request to edit your password.

Once you’re on your PayPal settings page, click the Security tab, and then click Edit beside where it says “Password”.

4. Enter your current password, choose a new password, provide a copy of your new password, and confirm the password change.

Click in the box that says “Current Password” and type in the password that you are currently using to protect your PayPal account.  Then, click in the box labelled “New Password” and type in the password that you want to use to protect your PayPal account from now on.  Then click in the box labelled “Confirm New Password” and type in a copy of the password that you just picked.  Finish up by clicking Change Password.

That’s how to give your PayPal account a new password if you’re already able to log into your PayPal account.  If you can’t get into your account because you’ve forgotten your password, see our next tutorial: How to Reset Your PayPal Password.

Detailed instructions for how to contact PayPal customer service

1. Log into PayPal.

Steps 1 and 2 of our How to Transfer Money to PayPal tutorial will show you how this is done, if you need some reminding.

2. Go to PayPal’s “Contact” page.

Once you’re on your main page for PayPal, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click Contact.

3. Request PayPal’s phone information.

If you want to reach PayPal customer service by phone, click Call Us to display their contact information.

(NOTE: If you want to send an internal email message to PayPal instead, skip to step 5.)

4. Call PayPal customer service, entering the passcode that you receive for speedier service.

The new page that you are on will display PayPal’s customer service phone number, as well as their customer service phone line hours and any special instructions for contacting them by phone (e.g. how to talk to someone in a different language).

It will also display a one-time six-digit passcode that you can input, when prompted, when you call PayPal customer service in order to get help faster.  This passcode will expire in an hour, so call PayPal as soon as you can!

5. Enter PayPal’s messaging centre.

If you think that you can better describe the issue that you’re having with PayPal in written words as opposed to spoken ones, click Message Centre (or Email Us).

6. Select to compose a new message.

Once you’re inside the interface for secure messages about your account, sent between you and PayPal customer service, click Create New Message in the top-right corner.

7. Choose the topic and subtopic of your message, write it out, and send it to PayPal.

You will see two drop-down menus labelled Choose a Topic and Choose a Subtopic.  Click both of these (in order) and select one of the options that appear in each of them to narrow down your issue.  Depending on the combination that you choose, additional drop-down menus may appear, prompting you to select even more specific topics.  Other times, hyperlinks will appear that will direct you to various functions or help articles on PayPal.

Still other combinations will allow you to write a freeform message to PayPal customer service.  If this happens, click in the box labelled “Message: Please Be Specific” and type in a detailed description of the problem that you are having with using PayPal.  Then, click Send.
