How Does Pinterest Make Money?

With how useful and neat Pinterest is, as well as how popular it has been getting lately, they have to be raking in some serious cash, right? But when you offer a free service, how do you make money off of it? In this tutorial, we’ll explain how Pinterest makes its money, as well as avenues they make explore for making money in the future. So how does Pinterest make money?

Pinterest makes money through ads on boards, as businesses are openly allowed to advertise their products to users, who are often looking to purchase new items. They also recently launched the Pinterest Shop on iOS and Android devices, which allows users to buy products instantly with a credit card.

Buyable pins on Pinterest is one of those interesting websites or apps like Snapchat that is valued very highly, yet seems to not bring in much revenue because of the way it is designed. With advertisements and sales from those ads, they estimate bringing in revenue in the billions by 2018. The new Pinterest Shop is also very convenient, and will likely bring in more revenue for the website in the coming years.

Pinterest and their investor relations

Taking a very unique approach to marketing themselves, they offer their services for free, even to small businesses who want to use the platform to advertise and promote themselves. In general, they’re looking to find out two things:

  1. How many (new) users they can attract to the website.
  2. How many users follow posts and pages from businesses on Pinterest back to the websites of those businesses (where they will then hopefully purchase products or services).

Based on those two things, Pinterest is looking to keep potential investors guessing as to how effective of a marketing tool Pinterest can be for their business. This is why, while the website doesn’t have many established ways of making money yet, the company is estimated to be worth around $5-10 billion USD.

Potential money-making models for Pinterest

As for how Pinterest might be able to make money in the future, some potential avenues that have been speculated upon include:

  • Placing advertisements for paying businesses next to related posts (a feature called “Promoted Pins” that they recently launched)
  • Selling information to marketers about what people look for the most, in order to help those marketers know what products to sell, where to sell them, and who wants them
  • Selling control of the company to a computer or Internet mega-corporation like Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft

To report a pin, comment, message, or other user on Pinterest

If you come across something offensive or inappropriate on Pinterest, you can easily report it and have it removed. Reports are anonymous, so feel free to report anything that shouldn’t be on Pinterest if you see it. Pinterest will review the report and may take any of the following actions: remove a pin, remove a board, restrict the use of an account, or permanently disable an account.

Below, we explain how to report pins, comments, or messages.

To report a pin:

If you want to report a pin, click the “” at the top of the pin, and select Report Pin from the pop-up menu. Choose a type for your report and click Next. Then choose a reason for your report, click Report Pin, and then click Done.

To report a comment:

Find the comment you want to report and move your mouse cursor over the flag icon to the right of the comment. Click Report Comment when it pops up. Choose a reason for your report and click Report Comment.

To report a message:

Locate the message you want to report, and then move your mouse cursor near the “X“, and click Flag. Choose a reason for reporting the message from the options given to you to submit the report. You can also simply click Block to block the user from sending any messages to you in the future.

Any report you make affects the user, so reporting a pin, comment, or message is essentially the same as reporting a user. Pinterest may limit the use of the user’s account (or permanently disable it), so make sure you think carefully about reporting something before you send the report.

4 Pinterest customer service tips

Use these tips below to help make your problem-solving faster and easier.

1. Use the help center first, and read about your problem(s).

Pinterest has a help center that you can access, which has answers to many of the questions you may have. Visit to access the help center, and browse through any of the help topics. Some popular topics include:

  • Your account
  • Legal and privacy
  • Businesses
  • Safety
  • Shopping

2. Try to solve the problem/issue yourself.

Using the help center as a guide, try navigating through to see if you can’t find a solution to your problem yourself. When you contact Pinterest, chances are they will ask you if you have done this before assisting you, so you might as well try at the start.

3. Be as detailed as possible in the explanation of your problem to help solve it faster.

When you fill out the contact form, put as much detail into your description of the issue as you possibly can. The better you explain your issue here, the more likely Pinterest customer service will be able to solve the problem quickly. If they need to contact you to ask you more questions about the problem, the entire process will take much longer.

4. Remember that Pinterest wants to help you, and will do everything they can to solve your problems.

Though it’s often frustrating when Pinterest isn’t working for you, you have to remember that this is typically an error with the website. Your problem is (usually) not caused by the customer service representative; they want their product to work properly for you, and will do everything they can to solve the issue. Work with them, not against them, to help get you back to using Pinterest as soon as possible.

That’s how you contact Pinterest customer service to solve any of your problems! If you’re having more than just a small problem, you may want to consider deleting your Pinterest account for good. If you like the idea of Pinterest, but it just doesn’t seem right for you, we’ve also got a list of similar websites and apps, so you may still be able to find inspiration from another website.

Tips when changing your password

If you needed to reset your password, you may have forgotten it, or your account may have been accessed by someone else because your password was not secure enough. Check out our tips for changing your password below.

1. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters.

Just using letters is not good enough for today’s modern password. Make sure to use all three of these at least once in your password, although using each multiple times is ideal.

2. Use both upper-case and lower-case letters.

In addition to adding variety to the characters you use, you should make sure to use both upper and lower-case letters for your passwords.

3. Make your password as long and complex as possible.

Though passwords can be difficult to remember, and it’s important to make them complex and long, because each character you add to the length of your password makes it exponentially more difficult to hack or guess.

4. Don’t use information that is easy to guess or obtain from you.

Birthdates, anniversaries, license plate numbers, and the like are all things that many people know about your, can easily find out, or are publicly available. These are commonly used in passwords because they are easy to remember, but this also makes them incredibly easy to guess.

5. Make your password unique and seemingly random.

Making your password unique is important, so avoid using common patterns such as “123456” and so on. The more you make your password unique to you, the easier it will be to remember, no matter how complex or random it is. By adding numbers and making the password seem random to others, it will be nearly impossible to guess.
