How to Reset Your Spotify Password

If you happen to forget the password to your Spotify account, don’t panic.  As long as you remember either your user name on Spotify or the email address that you used to sign up for Spotify, you can get a new password fairly easily.

Resetting your password is also a good safety measure to take if you think that someone knows how to get into your Spotify account without your permission.  It’s rare that you will need to reset your password for this reason, but in case it happens, you’ll know what to do.

To reset your Spotify password

  1. Go to www.spotify.com in your web browser and click Log In.

  2. On the log-in screen, click Forgot Your Username or Password?

  3. Click in the box labelled “Email Address or Username” and type in either the email address that you used to sign up for Spotify, or the user name that you chose to represent yourself with on Spotify.  Then click Send.

Spotify will send you an email with a link that will let you reset your password.

  4. Go to your email client and open the email from Spotify titled “Reset Your Password”.  Click the green hyperlink within it (blurred out here for privacy reasons).

  5. Click in the box labelled “New Password” and type in a new password that you want to use for your Spotify account.  Then click in the box labelled “Confirm Password” and type in a copy of this password.  Finally, click Set Password.

  6. If you successfully reset your password, you will see the screen below.  Click Go to Account to go back to your Spotify account page.

Alright!  You’re back in control of your Spotify account.  By the way, if you’re having trouble remembering your different computer passwords (which we won’t blame you for one bit), consider using a password manager program to help keep track of them.  Our What Is a Password Manager article will give you an introduction to how these programs work.

How to Change Your Spotify Password

As rare as it is, having someone make unauthorized use of one of your Internet accounts is no fun.  It’s even less fun when there are paid services involved.  If you’re subscribed to Spotify Premium, you really don’t want a stranger using premium services that you paid for, or worse, finding your financial information and using it to purchase things for themselves at your expense.

Again, though, this is a situation that will almost never happen, especially if you take the right safety precautions.  A key one is making sure that the password that protects your Spotify account is difficult to break.  If you’re not sure if it is, read our How Secure Is My Password article for some hints on checking the strength of your password.  You can also use these hints to come up with a better password.

As for actually changing your Spotify password, the process is fairly simple.

To change your Spotify password:

  1. Go to www.spotify.com in your web browser and log in.

  2. You should be taken to your “Account Overview” screen.  Look in the left-hand-menu for Change Password and click it.

  3. Click in the box labelled “Current Password” and type in the password that you are using for your Spotify account right now.  Then click in the box labelled “New Password” and type in the password that you want to use for your Spotify account going forward.  Then click in the box labelled “Repeat New Password” and type in a copy of your new password.  Finally, click Set New Password (or click Cancel if you change your mind).

  4. If you are successful in changing your password, you will receive the message “Password Updated” from Spotify.

There!  You’ve changed your Spotify password!
