How to Withdraw Money from PayPal

We’ve shown you how to take money out of your bank account and put it into your PayPal account.  But what if you want to move money the other way; that is, take it out of your PayPal account and put it back into your bank account?  After all, there are some things that you just can’t pay for with PayPal.

Fortunately, PayPal makes this easy!  How easy?  We’ll show you!

To withdraw money from PayPal:

  1. Go to www.paypal.com in your web browser and log in.
  2. Scroll down to your “PayPal Balance”, and click Withdraw Money.
  3. Select the withdrawal’s amount, currency, and destination bank account, and click Continue.
  4. Review your transaction; click Change to go back to step 3, or click Withdraw to confirm it.

The process is similar to depositing money into your PayPal account, and pretty much just as simple.  Just in case, though, we’ve provided a full walkthrough so that you can make sure that you do everything that you need to.

Detailed instructions for how to transfer money from PayPal to your bank account

1. Go to PayPal and log in.

See steps 1 and 2 of our How to Transfer Money to PayPal tutorial if you need a refresher on how to do this.

2. Submit a request to withdraw money from your PayPal account.

Once you’re on your main page for PayPal, scroll down to the section labelled “PayPal Balance” and click Withdraw Money.

3. Choose what type of currency — and how much of it — you wish to withdraw, and select what account it will be sent to.

On the next screen, click the first drop-down menu and select which denomination of currency you wish to withdraw from your PayPal account (if you have more than one in your account).  Then, click in the box labelled “Amount” and type in the amount of that currency that you wish to withdraw.  Next, click the drop-down menu below that and select the bank account that you wish to transfer the money to (again, if you have more than one).  Finish up by clicking Continue.

4. Choose to change any details of your transaction if you need to, or confirm the transaction.

On the next screen, you’ll review your withdraw request.  Beside “Amount”, you can click Change and go back to step 3 to re-select your currency, amount to withdraw, and destination bank account if one or more of them isn’t correct.  Otherwise, click Withdraw if everything looks set up properly.

Note that, like when you transferred money to your PayPal account from your bank account, it will usually take a little while for the money to be sent the other way.  At any rate, congratulations on learning how to withdraw money from your PayPal account back to your bank account!

How to Pay with PayPal

So, we’ve shown you how to add money to your PayPal account and how to send money through PayPal to someone else.  Now, we’ll give you instructions for what you’ll probably be using PayPal for the most: paying for online shopping!  Oh, and remember that using PayPal to pay for your online purchases is free, meaning that PayPal won’t tack any fees onto the costs of your purchases!

Where can I shop and pay with PayPal?

Many different shopping websites, retail chains, and even charities accept PayPal as payment! For a list of popular brands and organizations that accept PayPal as payment, click here.

To pay with PayPal:

  1. Select something to purchase on a participating website, and proceed to check out.
  2. When asked for a payment option, select “PayPal” (or Pay with PayPal).
  3. Log into your PayPal account.
  4. Select the account on PayPal that you wish to draw money from (if possible).
  5. Review and complete your transaction.

See?  It’s not all that different from paying for something online using your credit card.  But how exactly is it different, you ask?  Okay, we’ll show you.

Detailed instructions for how to pay by PayPal

1. Find something that you want to buy from a PayPal-eligible website, and check out.

The only real difference between shopping online with your credit card and shopping online with PayPal is what to do when it comes time to choose how you wish to pay for your purchase.  To demonstrate, let’s try purchasing something from eBay.com.  Start by following steps 1 through 6 in our How to Buy on eBay tutorial.

2. When asked to pay for your item or subscription, select PayPal as the payment method.

Once you get to the checkout page, click the button next to “PayPal” under the “Pay With” section.  (NOTE: on some websites, this may instead be a button that says Pay with PayPal.)

3. Provide your PayPal account log-in credentials.

A new window or page will appear, prompting you to log into your PayPal account.  Click in the box labelled “Email” and type in the email address associated with your PayPal account.  Then, click in the box labelled “Password” and type in the password that you picked to protect your PayPal account.  Finish up by clicking Log In.

4. Choose which account on PayPal you will pay with.

Once you’ve logged into PayPal and authorized it as a payment method for the particular website that you’re on (in this case, eBay), you will see your default payment option for PayPal appear.  Click Change (or the arrow icon highlighted here) if you wish to change the account that PayPal will use to pay for your purchase, and then click the button beside the account that you want to use (in this case, I have my bank account selected, but I could choose my credit card instead).

Note that if you have transferred any money to your PayPal account balance, PayPal may automatically use any money there instead of allowing you to choose which linked account to pay with (or it may give you a choice anyway).

5. Confirm the rest of your transaction.

After you’ve selected PayPal as your payment option and selected which (linked) account on PayPal will be paying for your purchase, all that’s left to do is check the rest of your ordering information (shipping options and addresses, rewards and coupons, etc.).  If everything looks good, just click Confirm and Pay.

That’s how to pay with PayPal while shopping online!  It’s just that easy!

How to Send Money through PayPal

In our last lesson, we showed you how to send money from your bank account to your own PayPal account.  Now, what if you want to send money to someone else’s PayPal account?  That’s what we’ll be covering in this tutorial.

Remember: only make direct money transfers (through PayPal or any other transfer service, such as Western Union) to people whom you personally know and trust, such as close friends or family members.  Doing so lessons your chances of getting scammed.  See our Is PayPal Safe article for more details.

Also remember that sending money to someone through PayPal will result in transaction fees if you pay for it through your credit or debit card, or the money goes somewhere other than the U.S. or Canada.  Our Is PayPal Free article outlines the exact costs (here).

To send money through PayPal:

  1. Go to www.paypal.com and log in.
  2. Click Send & Request, and then click Send Money to Friends and Family.
  3. Enter the email address or telephone number of the recipient.
  4. Choose the amount and currency of money to send.
  5. Review your transaction, and confirm it by clicking Send Money Now.

That’s the short-and-sweet version.  If you need a bit more detail, read on.

Detailed instructions for sending money through PayPal

1. Log into PayPal.

If you need help remembering how to do this, see steps 1 and 2 in our How to Transfer Money to PayPal tutorial.

2. Submit a request to send money through PayPal.

In the menu across the top of the screen, click Send & Request.  Then, click Send Money to Friends and Family.

3. Type in the email address or phone number of the person whom you wish to send money to.

Click in the text box here and type in the email address or phone number associated with the PayPal account of the person whom you wish to send money to over PayPal.  Then click Next.

4. Select how much money to send and what currency it will be in, and add an optional note.

Click on the dollar amount here and type in the amount of money that you wish to send to this person.  Then, click the menu below it to decide what currency the amount will be in (remember, if the currency is different from your domestic one, there is a charge for conversion).

You can also click Write a Note and send a message along with the money (perhaps why it is being sent or what it is to be used for).  When you’re ready to move on, click Continue.

5. Make any necessary changes, and confirm your transaction.

PayPal will show you a review of your transfer, including any fees that you will have to pay.

If you want to change the source of your money transfer (as you may be able to avoid transfer fees by doing so), scroll down to the “You’re Sending With” section and click Change Payment Method.  A side bar will pop out on the right side of your screen; simply click on the new payment method that you wish to use.

When you’re all set, click Send Money Now.

That’s it; your money is on its way!  Now you know how to send money through PayPal!

How to Create a PayPal Account

Okay, so we’ve told you how PayPal works, given you some safety tips, outlined the costs of using PayPal, and reviewed its pros and cons.  Now, it’s time to start using PayPal for real!  The first thing that you’ll need to do before you start using PayPal is create a user account.  This lesson will walk you through everything that you need to do to make that happen.

To sign up for PayPal:

  1. Go to www.paypal.com and click Sign Up.
  2. Select Sign Up for a Personal Account.
  3. Enter your country, email address, and password.
  4. Enter your other personal details.
  5. Link your credit card to PayPal (optional).
  6. Link your bank account to PayPal (optional).
  7. Verify your email address with PayPal.

That’s quite a long process, right?  Well, PayPal is all about handling people’s money, so they have to make sure that everyone who uses their service is legitimate.  Don’t worry; we’ll walk you through the motions step-by-step below.

Detailed instructions for how to create a PayPal account

1. Request to sign up for PayPal.

Go to www.paypal.com in your web browser, and click Sign Up in the top-right corner.

2. Choose to sign up for a personal PayPal account.

We assume that you’ll be using PayPal as a way to pay for purchases (both online and off) and send money to other people, as opposed to accepting payments from people whom you sell stuff to.  In that case, click Sign Up for a Personal Account.

3. Provide your email address, a password (and copy), and your home country.

Next, you have to fill in your basic account details.

Click in each of the boxes highlighted here and select or type in, respectively:

  • the country in which you live
  • your email address
  • a password with which to protect your account
  • a copy of the password that you just entered

When you’re all set, click Continue.

4. Provide your other personal information.

Next, you will have to fill in the personal details that PayPal will need to verifiably connect your account with your credit card, debit card, or bank.

Click in each of the boxes highlighted here and select or type in, respectively:

  • your first name
  • your middle name (optional)
  • your last name
  • your date of birth (numeric day/month/year format)
  • your field of occupation
  • your social insurance number (optional)
  • your street address
  • your unit address (optional)
  • your area mailing code
  • the city in which you live
  • the state, province, or territory in which you live
  • your phone number (click the menu beside it to select Mobile or Home number)

If you don’t want extra emails from PayPal telling you about updates and promotions on PayPal’s services, click the check box here to unmark it.

Once everything has been filled in correctly, click Agree and Create Account.

5. Add your credit card as a PayPal option.

The next step is to link your credit card or debit card to your PayPal account.  This allows you to shop in stores online and in the real world with PayPal, and have the purchase automatically charged to your credit card.

Click in each of the boxes highlighted here and type in:

  • your credit card number
  • your credit card’s expiration date (numerical month/year [last two digits of year])
  • your credit card’s security code

PayPal will assume that the billing address for your credit card is the same as the personal one that you provided in the previous step.  If it isn’t, click Edit and provide the correct street address, unit address (optional), mailing code, city, and state/province/territory.

When you’ve filled in all of your information, click Link Card.

If you don’t have a credit card, or don’t want to add it as a payment option for PayPal, click I’d Rather Link My Bank Account First.  See our How to Use PayPal without a Credit Card tutorial for further instructions.

6. Add your bank account as a PayPal option.

Once you have linked your credit card to PayPal, you can also link your bank account(s) to your PayPal account, too.  Or, if you don’t want to link your bank account(s) to PayPal (at least not right now), click I’ll Link My Bank Account Later (click the button that appears after this to confirm).

7. Verify your email address.

There’s one more thing that you need to do to complete the setup of your account, and that’s verify your email address.  You can’t use your PayPal account without doing so!  Go to your email client and log in.  Find the email from PayPal Service titled “Welcome to PayPal” and click on it to open it.  From there, just click the blue Yes, This is My Email Address button in the email.

To complete confirmation of your email address for your PayPal account, you will need to enter your account password.  Click in the box labelled “Password” and type in the password that you picked to protect your PayPal account.  Then click Confirm My Email Address.

That’s it!  Your PayPal account is ready, and you’re all set to start using it!  Our next lesson will be how to transfer money to the balance in your PayPal account.
