We've already explained that you need to sign up for a paid account on Angie's List in order to use it for viewing ratings and reviews for businesses in your area. But there's a cool feature of Angie's List that you don't have to pay money to use. It's called "Big Deals", and it allows you to hire services in your local area right through Angie's List. And if you're an Angie's List member, you get additional discounts!
The catch is that you have to both purchase an Angie's List Big Deal and schedule a service appointment with the business providing the deal by certain dates. However, unlike many other deal-of-the-day websites (such as WagJag or Groupon), you don't have to wait for a bunch of other people to buy the same Angie's List Big Deal that you do before you can use it. Each one is valid as soon as you get it!
To browse and purchase Angie's List Big Deals:
Go to www.angieslist.com in your web browser. Below the big Join Now button on the main screen, click Shop Local Offers. (HINT: If you're on another screen in Angie's List, you can also click The Big Deal in the menu under the header.)
NOTE: If you are not logged into your Angie's List account — or you don't have one — a box will pop up asking you to enter your mailing code. Type it in and click Update.
You should now see a table of deals from local businesses in your area.
If you want to see deals for other areas, click Change Location at the top of the screen, type a mailing code into the box that pops up, and then click Update.
You can also click one of the business sub-categories listed under "Filter by Category" to only see deals from those types of businesses. Or, you can click the drop-down menu labelled "Sort By" and select to sort deals by how frequently they've been purchased frequently by other people, how soon they'll be expiring, how recently they started being offered, and how big of a discount off the retail price they offer.
At the bottom of the screen, you can click one of the blue numbers — or Next or Previous — to cycle through the different pages of deals (if they won't all fit on one page). You can also click the drop-down menu labelled "Deals per Page" and select how many deals you wish to see at a time on the same webpage.
Click View It inside the box of a deal that you'd like to know more about in order to see its details.
Once you're on the details page for the deal that you've selected, you will see information on what services will be provided, any restrictions or limitations on the deal, and a quick summary of the providing business's profile on Angie's List. Read these over carefully to make sure that the deal is really what you want. If it is, click Buy It Now.
You will be asked to log into your account. If you have one, click in the box labelled "Email Address" and type in the email address that you used to sign up for Angie's List. Then click in the box labelled "Password" and type in the password that you picked to protect your account. Finally, click Sign In.
If you don't have an Angie's List account (or don't want to sign in), just click Check Out. (You will have to sign up for a separate Angie's List Big Deal account with your first and last name, mailing code, email address, and a password.)
The final step is to review and confirm your order, including entering your billing information. We'll split this step into two parts.
First, under "Items to Buy", you will see the service that you are purchasing. If you want to purchase more than one instance of this service, click in the box labelled "Quantity" and type in the number that you want. Then click Update. Or, if you don't want this service after all, click Remove below it.
If you don't have an account on the main Angie's List website, you may be asked to purchase an annual basic membership. If you don't want to, click the check box under "Quantity" to unmark it. (Note that if you don't have a membership, you won't get the discount on the service, and will have to pay full price for it.) If you do, be sure to click the check box underneath it to say that you agree to the terms of being a member.
Also, if you have a promotional code from Angie's List (such as if you got a discount by signing up for a Plus-tier or Premium-tier account), click in the box labelled "Promo Code" and type it in. Then click Apply.
The second part of finishing your Angie's List Big Deal order is deciding how you're going to pay for it.
If you want to pay through online transaction service PayPal, click the PayPal Checkout button highlighted in the screenshot below, and then follow our How to Pay with PayPal tutorial (here), starting at step 3 (and skip the rest of this step).
If you want to pay by credit card instead, click in each of the text boxes and drop-down menus highlighted in the screenshot above and type in or select:
– Your name, as it appears on your credit card
– Your street address and (if applicable) unit address
– Your credit card number
– The city in which you live
– The state in which you live
– The month and year that your credit card expires
– The mailing code for your address
Also, be sure to click the check box here to say that you agree to abide by the rules of Angie's List, as well as the rules of this particular deal.
When you're all set, click Place Your Order.
Angie's List will send you an email confirming your order, including a code that will allow the business offering the deal to process your discount (if applicable). Within two days, the business should call or email you in order to set up an appointment for your service. Once you have a date and time, all you need to do is show up (or wait for them to show up), give them your discount code (if you have one), and enjoy their service!
That's the long and short of how Angie's List Big Deals work!
Now that you’ve created an Angie’s List account, let’s get started using the website! This tutorial will show you how to use the main part of the Angie’s List website.
To use Angie’s List, sign into your account. Then, select a category of services to browse, or search for something specific. Use the search options to filter and sort your results, and then click on a business to view its info, reviews, and ratings. From there, you can also write a review of the company.
As you can see, there are a couple of different steps to getting around Angie’s List, so we’ll break them down for you in our full walkthrough below.
Under “Member Sign In”, click in the box labelled “Email Address or Member ID” and type in the email address that you used to sign up for Angie’s List. Then, click in the box labelled “Password” and type in the password that you picked to protect your Angie’s List account. Finally, click Sign In.
How to search for businesses on Angie’s List
Once you’re on the main page for Angie’s List, you can click one of the categories under “Most Popular Services” to see companies of that type that people hire frequently. (NOTE: Unless you have a Plus-tier or Premium-tier Angie’s List subscription, you will be unable to view any companies under the “Health” heading. See our How Much Does Angie’s List Cost article for more information.)
Or, if you want to look for something specific by keyword, click in the box labelled “What Do You Need Help With Today?” and type in the name or type of business that you’re looking for. Then click the Search button.
Regardless of what you chose in the previous step, you’ll be taken to the search page for Angie’s List.
You can click the List or Map buttons in the top-right corner to switch between viewing companies in a list, or viewing them on a map of your local area. You can also click the drop-down menu labelled “Sort By” and choose to sort your search results by:
– Putting companies that have discount coupons first
– Companies from highest grade to lowest grade
– Companies with most reviews to fewest reviews
– Companies closest to you, followed by those furthest from you
– Companies in alphabetical order, by name
– Putting companies that allow you to hire them through Angie’s List first
There are also a myriad of filtering options on the left-hand bar that can allow you to narrow your search results, usually through clicking buttons or check boxes. Make any changes that you want, and then click Refine Your Search. Or, if you want to return to your default search settings, click Reset All Search Options instead.
When you find a company that you want to view, click on its name.
How to write a review of a business on Angie’s List
Once you’re on the page for a business on Angie’s List, you can see their contact information and provided services on the left-hand side of the screen. In the main part of your window, you’ll see the business’s ratings (averaged across recent or all reviews) — from “A” (highest) to “F” (lowest) — in five categories: price, quality, responsiveness, punctuality, and professionalism. You can also see statistics like how many reviews have been written about this business, or how many disputes have arisen between this business and an Angie’s List user.
Below the business’s ratings, you will see the actual reviews that have been submitted about this company. You can filter them by which ones were submitted by Angie’s List users or which ones were submitted by verified outside parties, or just choose to see all reviews.
At the top of the page, you can click Email Provider to send an email to this business and see if you can work out an appointment to have them do work for you. (In some cases, you may be able to schedule work right through Angie’s List!). Or, if you’ve dealt with this company in the past and want to write a review for them, click Write Review.
Once you’re on the review page, click the buttons under the “Ratings” heading to rank the company’s service overall, as well as on the five key service categories: price, quality, responsiveness, punctuality, and professionalism. “A” is the highest rating, and “F” is the lowest rating. Click the “N/A” button for a service category if you don’t know how to rate the company on it (for example, if it wasn’t applicable to the type of service they performed).
Below that, under the “Details of Your Experience” heading, you’ll have to fill in information like whether or not the company actually did the work that you asked for, what they did, when they did it, and how much it cost. You can also say things like whether or not you would hire that company again, and leave any other additional comments that you feel are relevant. (Note that all of the fields marked with an asterisk — a “*” — must be filled out.)
Finally (though not shown in the screenshot above), under the “Confirm” heading, click the check box to say that your review is genuine, and you’re not an employee of the company trying to make them look good, or a competitor’s employee trying to make the company look bad. When you’re all set, click Submit Review.

We've told you a bit about what Angie's List is, gone over the costs of using the service, and discussed the pros and cons of using Angie's List (in our previous tutorial). Now, let's get started using it! In this tutorial, we will outline the process for creating an Angie's List account.
To sign up for Angie's List, you first need to provide them with your email address, a password, and your local ZIP code. Then, you need to select a subscription tier (basic, plus, or premium) and length. Finally, you need to pay for your subscription by entering your credit card information.
Let's break down how to do all of that into easy-to-follow numbered steps, shall we?
To create an Angie's List account:
Go to www.angieslist.com in your web browser and click the Join Now button in the top-right corner.
Click in each of the boxes in the sign up form and type in your mailing code, your email address, and a password to protect your account with. You can also click the check box here to unmark it if you don't want to receive emails about various discounts and offer on Angie's List (or leave it marked if you do). Then click Continue.
On the next screen, you will have to select the length of your subscription to Angie's List, and which tier of service you want.
Click the tabs that say Basic, Plus, and Premium to cycle through the different tiers of Angie's List service. Then, click one of the buttons beside a time period and rate to set your subscription to Angie's List for that amount of time (and pay that amount of money during each period).
If you have a promotional code for Angie's List, click in the box labelled "Promo Code" and type it in, and then click Apply. Once you've got everything sorted out, click Next.
The last part of signing up for Angie's List is entering your billing information. There are two sets of information that you need to fill in, so we'll split this part into two steps.
The first step is deciding how you wish to pay for your Angie's List subscription. Click the button beside "Credit Card" if you wish to pay by credit card, or click the button beside "PayPal" if you wish to use the online transaction service PayPal.
If you choose to use PayPal, click the check box that appears to say that you agree to the rules of Angie's List. Then, click the PayPal: Click Here to Pay button and follow our How to Pay with PayPal tutorial from step 3 onwards (skipping the rest of this step and the next). As a bonus, Angie's List will discount your membership fee by 20%!
If you wish to pay by credit card instead, click in each of the boxes highlighted here and type in:
– Your credit card number (with no dashes or spaces)
– Your credit card's expiry date (month number / last two dates of year)
– Your credit card's security code (the pictures here will help you find it)
– Your name, as it appears on your credit card
The next step is to enter your billing address, and confirm your order.
Click in each of the boxes and drop-down menus highlighted here and type in or select:
– Your first name
– Your last name
– Your street address
– Your unit address (optional)
– The city in which you live
– The state in which you live
– The mailing code for your address
Then, click the check box here to say that you agree to the rules of Angie's List. Finally, click Submit.
