Groupon Bucks

Groupon Bucks are a type of currency only used within Groupon. Think of them like a points reward system at a grocery store, only without having to remember how many points is equal to how many dollars (since it’s already in a dollar value). The only way to get Groupon Bucks is to earn them and through promotions.

Groupon Bucks can be used like cash to purchase vouchers, gifts and more from Groupon.  They work similarly to a gift card: you can use your Groupon Bucks to pay for as much as you can, and then use your credit card for the rest.

How to Get Groupon Bucks

Groupon Bucks can only be earned by referrals or through purchases.

Getting Groupon Bucks through Referrals

To gain Groupon Bucks through referrals, you must recommend Groupon to your friends.  When they make their first purchase on Groupon, you’ll be award $10 in Groupon Bucks. This will remain the same for every referral you make – so if 10 people make a purchase off Groupon who were referred by you, you make $100 in Groupon Bucks.  Here’s how to do it.

  1. Go to in your web browser and log in.
  2. Once you get back to Groupon’s home page, click your name in the top right corner and select Refer Friends, Get $10* from the drop down menu.
  3. You’ll be taken to a page with multiple ways to refer friends. Click Mail It to start an email with a referral link inside. Click Share It on Facebook or Tweet It to start a post on Facebook or Twitter, respectively, that includes a referral link. Or just click Get Link for a referral hyperlink that you can copy and paste into pretty much any other place you can publish web content, such as on your own website or in the “comments” section of another.
  4. All posts, tweets and emails sent out will have a link that others will click to get to Groupon. It’s a special code that lets Groupon know you’re the one who referred them. This way, they know who to give Groupon bucks to.

Getting Groupon Bucks through Promotions

Another way to gain Groupon Bucks is by promotional offers. Recently, Groupon gave its customers the option to gain 5% back in Groupon Bucks when they bought certain packages from Groupon Getaways. To learn more about Groupon Getaways, check out our Groupon Travel tutorial.

Occasionally, Groupon will send out an email for promotional days. One instance was an email that Groupon sent saying that if you bought any Groupon on the promotional day, you automatically got 5 Groupon Bucks. Just another way that Groupon helps you save money!

Groupon Settings

Since Groupon is less of a social media site and more for online shopping, there aren’t many account settings to toy around with. However, it’s always a good idea to know how to change your Groupon email address, password, and credit card information.

How to Change your Groupon Settings

Let’s look at the Account tab for now (i.e. click it). From here you can change your name, email address, or password easily.  When you’re done making any changes that you want to, click Save Changes.

  5. When you select My Profile, you’ll see a page similar to what you did while signing up. This page allows you to change your address and your preferences so that Groupon can tailor deals closer to you and your interests.

For example, click the drop-down menu under “A Few Basics about You” to select if you want to see more deals geared towards men, women, or both. Or, click the heart buttons underneath “Deal Preferences” to ask to see more deals based on a particular theme.

You can also get more deals from stores close to you by telling Groupon about places you frequent. Click in the text box underneath “Where Do You Want Your Deals?” and type in an address. Then click the drop-down menu beside it and select what that place is to you (e.g. home, work, or a favorite hangout spot). Finally, click Add. You can also get rid of any address you’ve already added by clicking Delete beside it.

Those are a few of the major settings that you can change in Groupon!

Groupon Travel

Groupon travel is a great way to get amazing deals on hotels, flights, and tourist activities at every major travel destination in the world. Choose between all-inclusive trips, such as this one to Peru:

Or just get a hotel – such as this one in Niagara Falls:

In January 2014, Groupon added another 20,000 hotels to the Getaways Marketplace – so you can get away more, for less.

Searching for a Groupon Getaway

  1. At the top of Groupon’s website, where the categories are, select Getaways to begin searching for your next adventure!

  2. On the left are a few menus with quick links to some popular destinations. First are Flash deals, which are offers of 15-70% off three to five star hotels. Second are Top Destinations that are the most popular destinations on Groupon. Lastly, Interests (not shown) are categorized according to interests – such as family fun, beach, international, tours, and more.

  3. To search for a specific deal location, use the search bar at the top to enter both your destination and your preferred check-in and checkout dates. When you’re finished, select Search Getaways.

  4. You’ll be shown all search results. If there are any all-inclusive packages, they should be at the top. Otherwise, it will mainly be hotels.

  5. Click whichever option you prefer to see the details of the deal. When you scroll down, you’ll be able to take a look at the location of the hotel and any amenities they may have.

For the example here, this four-star hotel is located near the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower. It has complementary Wi-Fi, rainfall shower heads, and LCD TVs, though breakfast is not included.

  6. Underneath is the fine print, such as the hotel’s cancellation policy. To view their fine print, you must choose a room. To choose a room, scroll back to the top and select how many adults and children will be staying at the hotel, then select one of the room options from the drop-down menu.

When you’re done, you’re able to scroll down to see the fine print. If you’re satisfied, scroll back up and select Book!

  7. You’ll now be able to see the details of your order, including the type of room, the number of guests, and which dates exactly you’ll be staying.

  8. Enter your traveler information and your credit card information (if you haven’t already) and select Complete Order.

  9. When you’ve booked your trip, Groupon will send you a verification email to let you know it went through. It’s always a good idea to wait a week or two (depending on how close your trip is) and call the hotel to make sure they’ve made the reservation.  As with most hotels, they will usually send you an email when you’re check-in date is approaching to remind you of your stay and any extra information they may have for you.

Bon Voyage!

Groupon Coupons

Unlike Groupons, that offer a service or product at a very discounted price, coupons are free deals – much like those you’d find in the newspaper. Groupon coupons are especially great if you’re shopping online, because there are tons of deals; though they do offer in-store printable coupons.

How to Find Groupon Coupons

  1. Go to and log in.
  2. Select Coupons in the top header of the website.

  3. This will take you to all of their coupon deals. To browse coupons by category, store, or keyword, use the options below. In this example, we’ll be shopping by store.

  4. Groupon will list the most popular stores first; underneath you are able to search alphabetically for the store name. To search alphabetically, first select the first letter of the store name that you’d like to search for.

  5. The list of results will be alphabetical, but it will be very long. On your computer keyboard, hold “Ctrl” and then press “F” to open the search function. The search function will appear either in the bottom left of your screen or top right. Type to start searching for your store name, and the search function will automatically find it for you.

Click on the store name to see a list of their coupons.

  6. There are three types of Groupon coupons:

Online coupons – Coupons with codes that can be redeemed while shopping online. Enter the code at checkout to redeem the coupon.

In-store coupons – Coupons that need to be printed out and brought in-store in order to redeem.

Sale coupons – Not exactly a coupon: you don’t need a code or the coupon itself, but it does let you know about store-wide sales the company is having.

  7. If you have an online coupon or a sale coupon, click Activate Sale to be redirected to another page. There will be a popup that will include the coupon code (if applicable) or will let you know that you do not need a coupon to get this great deal. Click Shop Now to be redirected to the store’s website.

  8. If the sale is in-store and needs a coupon, select the button Print this Coupon. A printable window will popup with a quick link to Print this Coupon and a preview of what your coupon will look like.

  9. Bring the coupon to the store nearest you and redeem for great savings on everything imaginable!

How to Redeem Groupon Vouchers

Where to Find your Voucher

When you’ve purchased a deal on Groupon, you’ll be given a voucher so that you can redeem it for your service or product. Groupon will only email you a confirmation receipt of the voucher.  To find the voucher itself, click on your name (i.e. your account) in the top menu bar, and select My Groupons from the drop-down menu that appears.

From there, you can simply click on the Groupon to select it.

How to Redeem the Voucher

When you select your Groupon, you should see a printable voucher. The voucher will include all of the fine print that you originally saw on the website – including any expiration dates or other rules and restrictions for using the voucher.

If you intend to redeem the voucher online, there will be a Groupon code that you can just copy and paste onto the merchant’s website (being careful not to include any spaces).

If the voucher you received is to be redeemed in person, print out the voucher and present it to the merchant where you will be redeeming your deal. Be careful about just showing up – some deals require you book a reservation or appointment in advance.

If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding the voucher, call up the business offering the Groupon.

Learn How to Use Groupon

Now that you’ve signed up for Groupon, it’s time to a take a look at some great deals!

Finding a Deal on Groupon

There are so many different deals that it’s best to have an idea of what you’re looking for – or at least the category it falls in. Want a good gift for your girlfriend? Try looking for a spa Groupon. Are you a car enthusiast? Check out the automotive category.

Once you get on and log in, you’ll be taken to Groupon’s homepage, which looks like the screenshot below. We’ve highlighted a few areas of interest. First, if you know generally what you’re looking for and where you want to get it, you can use the search bar at the top of the screen. Click in the left side and type in what you want, then click in the right side and type in where you want to look for it. Then click the magnifying glass to search.

You can also browse some general classes of Groupon goods and services by using the menu underneath the search bar. Local gets you top deals near your location. Goods gets you physical products that you can take home and use. Getaways is for deals on travel accommodations. Clearance is great for huge last-minute deals. Coupons let you get savings on everyday products. And Groupon usually has a seasonal section of deals, such as Fall Favorites seen here.

You can also just browse general categories of deals with the menu on the left-hand side. Or, if you’ve bought stuff from Groupon before, check out the Recommended for You section for deals you might like based on your past purchases.

When scrolling down on the home page, you’ll also be able to easily browse many unique deal categories that aren’t in the top menus. Categories like “Date Night Deals,” “Girls Night Out Deals,” and “Good For Gifting Deals” are a great way to browse for whatever you’re looking for. Each category has a quick link to View All in case you’d like to see more deals in that category.

How to Read a Groupon Deal

Once you’ve found a deal, you can check out the details of it quickly and easily. As a thumbnail, Groupon will show you a few things that will help you decide whether to check it out.

Among other things, you’ll see:

  • The name of the deal
  • The business offering the deal
  • The geographical location of the business
  • The suggested retail price of the deal
  • The discounted Groupon price of the deal

If you’ve found a deal you’re interested in, click on it to look at the deal in greater detail. It will show you the percentage discount, how much money you’re saving, how many people have bought it and more. On the right hand side, it will even show you how much time is left before the deal expires (note: if a deal expires on Groupon and you’ve already bought a voucher, the voucher is still valid).

By scrolling down, you’ll be able to read what you’ll get from the deal. For this example, the deal is good for one appetizer, one entrée and one dessert per person. Also enjoy an extra 10% off any bottle of wine with the Groupon. Some, like in this case, will give you a link to look at the menu available.

On the right hand side, you’ll see reviews and how many stars the restaurant has. By clicking the link, you’ll be able to read the reviews. Above this is the fine print. Always read the fine print before buying the Groupon.  In this case, the Groupon expires 90 days after purchase, reservations are required, and this Groupon is good for dine-in only (no takeout).

Buying a Groupon

If you’ve decided you want the Groupon, click Buy on the right hand side. If there is more than one deal within that Groupon, choose the deal you prefer. In this case, it’s a dinner for two or a dinner for four.

As of yet, you haven’t entered billing information, so now you’ll be prompted to do so. Complete the required sections, including:

  • Your name, as it appears on your credit card
  • Your credit card number
  • Your credit card’s expiry date (month and year)
  • Your credit card’s security code (click the blue “?” for help finding it)
  • Your street address
  • Your city of residence
  • Your territory of residence
  • Your mailing code

Make sure to review your purchase to make sure it’s correct. When you’re done, click Complete Order to purchase a voucher.

Shortly after, you should receive and email from Groupon confirming your purchase and giving you and printable voucher. The voucher will have all the fine print, so there’s no need to worry about remembering it from the website. If you’ve bought a ticket that has a book-by date, it will also say this on the voucher so that you can book an appointment or reservation as soon as possible.
