Logging into Kik

  1. Turn on your mobile device, and find Kik in your application manager.  Tap it to open it.

  3. Once you reach the log-in form for Kik, tap the box labelled "Email or User Name" and use your device's (virtual) keyboard to type in the Kik user name that you chose for yourself, or the email address that you used to sign up for Kik.  Then, tap the box labelled "Password" and type in the password that you picked to protect your Kik account.  Then tap Log In.

Chatting on Kik

  1. Once you're logged into Kik, you'll need to find someone whom you wish to have a conversation with.  Start by tapping the magnifying glass icon in the bottom-right corner of the main screen.

How to start a new conversation on Kik

  2. The next screen will let you look for people whom you wish to start a chat on Kik with.  Tap the box labelled "Name or User Name" and use your device's (virtual) keyboard to type in the name or user name of the Kik contact that you wish to talk to.  As you type, suggested contacts will appear below the box.  Tap one to start a conversation with one.

How to find a contact on Kik

As you can see, there are other tools here that can help you find contacts.  Tapping Start a Group will allow you to chat with multiple contacts at once.  Tap the box labelled "Name" and type in what you want to name your group; you can also tap the camera icon to take or search for a picture to represent your group.  Then, tap in the box labelled "Who Do You Want to Add?" and type in the name or user name of a person whom you wish to add to the group.  When their name appears as a suggestion below, tap them to add them to the group (or tap them in the list at the bottom of the screen to remove them from the group).  Continue searching for and adding group members, and then tap Start in the top-right corner to create the group.

Tapping Use Phone Contacts will allow Kik to search through your device's internal address book, match any information that it finds there with users on Kik, and add those users as Kik contacts for you.  Tap Enable or Disable to turn this feature on or off.

Tapping Scan a Kik Code will allow you to use your device's camera to identify another Kik user by a special picture, and add them as a Kik contact.  (Some other social messaging apps, such as Snapchat, have a similar feature.)  Press and hold your finger on the slider at the bottom, and then move your finger left or right to change modes.  If the slider is on the left, you can use your device's camera to scan someone else's Kik Code.  If the slider is on the right, your Kik Code will appear, allowing someone else to scan it.

Tapping Bot Shop allows you to download and chat with automated messaging programs, if you don't have anyone else to talk to (at least right now).  Some say funny things or give you information, while others allow you to play games with them.  Tap the "bot" that you wish to talk to, and then tap Chat.  You can also tap the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner and type in the name of a specific "bot" that you're looking for.

  3. Once you're inside a chat with someone, tap in the box labelled "Type a Message" and use your device's (virtual) keyboard to type in what you want to say to the person.  You can also tap the smiley face icon, and then tap an emoticon to add it to your message.  Tap the speech bubble icon to send your message.

How to compose a Kik message

  4. If you tap the "+" icon, you can find even more options for sending messages.  For example, if you tap the photo icon, you can select a photo from your device's internal memory to send as a message.  (You can still type a text message along with it to explain what it means.)

Other options for composing a Kik message

If you tap the camera icon, you can use your device's camera to take a picture and send that as a message.  Tap the lightning bolt icon to toggle your device's flash bulb, or tap the cycling arrows icon to switch your device's camera from facing away from you to facing towards you (and vice-versa).  Tap the white button to take a picture, or press and hold it to record a video message (take your finger off of it to stop the recording).  Then you can add an accompanying text message (if it's a picture), and then tap the speech bubble icon to send it.

If you tap the GIF icon, you can type in a word or phrase, or else tap an emoticon that appears, to search for related GIFs.  A "GIF" is a short, repeating animation or video.  Tap the "GIF" that you want to send as a message, and then tap the speech bubble icon to send it.

Tapping the cube icon (shown here) will give you even more options.

    — Tap Stickers to see any stickers that you have acquired; tap one to add it to your message.

    — Similarly, you can tap Viral Videos to search for popular videos on YouTube; tap a video to include it with your message.

    — If you tap Sketch, you can draw a picture to send as a message.  Press and hold on the white canvas to draw.  You can also tap the sideways division sign to create a "mirror effect" when you draw, the left arrow icon to undo your last move, the pencil icon to select what type of brush you want (including an eraser), the big dot icon to select the current colour that you're using, or the small dot icon to select the size of your brush.  Tap the Kik logo to finish and add your drawing to your message, or tap Cancel to discard your drawing.

    — If you tap Memes, you can create a funny captioned photo to send as a message.  First, tap which photo you would like to use.  Then, tap the top of the picture icon, and type the text that you want at the top of the picture (if any).  Then, tap the bottom of the picture icon, and type the text that you want at the bottom of the picture (if any).  Tap the Kik logo to add the picture to your message.

    — Tapping Browser allows you to find content somewhere else on the Internet to include in your message.  For more on that, see the next section.

Using the Kik browser

  1. You can even browse the Internet straight from the Kik app!  As you saw in the last step of the previous section, you can do this while in a conversation on Kik, but you can also do it from the main screen on Kik.  Start by tapping the globe icon.

How to open the Kik browser

  2. From here, you can see recent web pages within the Kik network that you have visited.  Tap one to visit it, or tap Clear to delete your most recent list of web pages visited.  You can also tap the magnifying glass icon to search for a web page within Kik's network by name, or tap Discover More Web Pages at the bottom of the screen to see all web pages available in Kik's network.

How to find a web page to visit on the Kik browser

  3. Once you're on a web page in Kik's browser, enjoy what you find there!  Oh, but one thing we should mention is how to share a web page in a Kik message.  You can tap the three dots at the bottom of the screen for more options.  One of these options is to Share via Kik.  If you tap this option, you can tap to select a Kik conversation that you already have going, or tap New Conversation and find someone whom you wish to send this web page to (see step 2 in the previous section).  Then a link to the web page will be added to your message.

How to share or exit a web page on the Kik browser

Oh, and if you tap the "X" here, you can exit the Kik browser.

Well, that's a crash course on how to use Kik Messenger!  We hope you enjoy using it!

How to Make a Kik Account

Hopefully by now, you've downloaded and installed the Kik app on your mobile device of choice.  Now, there's one more step that you need to do before you can start using Kik for real.  What is that step, you ask?  Creating your Kik account, of course!

To make a Kik account, start by opening the Kik app on your mobile device and tapping Register.  Then, enter your first and last names, a user name, your email address, a password, and your birthday.  You can add a profile picture, too.  Then, find friends who already use Kik (optional), and confirm your Kik account.

That's quite a lot of stuff to do!  Don't worry though; we'll explain everything that you need to do in detail below.

To sign up for Kik:

  1. Turn on your device and find the Kik app in your applications manager.  Tap it to open it.

  2. Under where it says "New to Kik?", tap Register.

  3. You'll be able to set up your Kik account and profile on the next screen.

How to fill out the Kik registration form

Tap in each of the boxes highlighted here and type in or select:

    – Your first name
    – Your last name
    – A user name to represent yourself with on Kik (can only contain letters or numbers)
    – Your email address
    – A password to protect your Kik account with
    – Your date of birth (necessary because Kik can only be used by ages 13 and up)

You can also tap Set Photo to give yourself a profile picture.  You can take one immediately with your device's camera, or find and select one that's already on your device's internal memory storage.

    When you're done, tap Register.

  4. If you wish, you can allow Kik to look through your contacts list on your device, and see if any of your contacts already use Kik.  If you're okay with that, tap Find Friends.  If not, tap Not Now.

  5. There's one more thing that you should probably do before you start using Kik, and that is confirm your email address for it.  To do so, open your web browser of choice, and log into the email client that governs the email address that you used to sign up for Kik.  Find the email from Kik titled "Welcome to Kik!  Confirm Your Details Inside" and click on it to open it.

How to confirm your email address for Kik

Under tip #1, you will see the user name and email address that you signed up for Kik with.  Click the blue "Here" hyperlink below them to confirm your Kik account.

Alright!  Now you can get back to the Kik app, where you should be on your main page.  Now that you're account is ready, we'll next walk you through how to use all of the cool features of Kik in our next tutorial!

How to Download and Install Kik

Now that we're done with the introductory lessons for Kik Messenger, let's get on the road to using it!  The first step will be to download and install the Kik Messenger app for your mobile device.

To download and install Kik, you first have to visit the app store on your mobile device.  From there, you have to search for the Kik app.  Then, tap Install, and log into your Google or Apple account (if you have to).  Give Kik the permissions on your device that it needs, and wait for it to download and install.

If that didn't make sense to you, then maybe it will when we spell it out in our full walkthrough below.

(NOTE: These directions are based on the use of a smart phone running the Google Android operating system.  We will provide cues where the process may differ on iPads or iPhones that run the Apple iOS operating system.)

To download and install the Kik app:

  1. Turn on your mobile device, and look for the Play Store (App Store on iOS devices).  Tap it to launch it.

  4. You will be informed of the functions on your device that Kik may need to use.  If you are okay with Kik doing so, tap Accept.
