Now that Vine has updated to Vine Camera, shooting videos is simpler than ever. It's time for you to take your shot! This tutorial will go through the basic steps of making a Vine video, editing it, saving it, and then sharing it on your favorite social media channels. Remember that your Vine videos will always be saved as a file on your device, so you can share them in any way you see fit!
To make a Vine video, you first need a video clip to work with. You can upload one from your device, or record one using the Vine Camera app. Then, you need to edit your video and save it to your device. The final step is to choose which people or social networks you wish to share your video with.
Below are walkthroughs for all three phases of making a Vine video: uploading or recording your video clip, editing your video clip, and then posting your video on social networks (or sharing it directly with friends).
How to create a Vine video
Find the Vine application on your mobile device and open it.
You are now in Vine's video editor. To upload a video already on your device into Vine, tap the import icon on the left (it looks like a little arrow pointing up towards a box), tap the location on your device that you want to get your video from, and then tap your video to select it.
NOTE: If you want to record your own video for Vine instead, skip this step and the next one.
Once you've chosen your video, tap and slide your finger over the orange bar below the video to select what segment of the video to upload (remember, videos on Vine can only be a maximum of six seconds in length). You can also tap and slide the white bar if you want to upload less than 6 seconds worth of footage from this clip. When you're done, tap Add.
If you want to create your own video on Vine, simply tap and hold on the main video screen to record! The recording stops when you release your finger from the screen. To continue recording, tap and hold the screen again. This allows you to record part of a Vine video in one location, and then finish recording in another.
The bar across the top of the screen will turn green to show you how much time you have recorded (and have left) from Vine's six second limit. If you want to finish recording your Vine video, tap the arrow icon in the top-right corner (and then skip to the next section). Or, you can tap the "X" to exit your video-making session. You can choose to save the session for later (more on that below) or discard it.
There are some other tools at the bottom of the screen that can help you in recording your Vine video.
The undo icon (the arrow pointing left with an "X" in it) allows you to review the last segment that you added to your Vine video, and delete it if you don't like it (without getting rid of the rest of your video). Tap once to review, and twice to delete.
The wrench icon gives you some technical aids, which will appear below the main toolbar. They are:
— Grid icon: adds a "rule of thirds" grid to your video window, helping you line up your shots.
— Crosshair icon: allows you to switch your video's focus between the foreground and the background.
— Ghost icon: displays a transparent still of the last frame of your most recent segment in the video window; this helps you remember what you were recording last and/or line up where objects were in the shot for when you record your next segment.
— Lightning icon: turns on the flash function of your device's camera if you need help filming in low-light situations.
The invert icon (the two cycling arrows) allows you to switch between your device's back camera (facing away from you) and front camera (facing towards you), if available.
The floppy icon allows you to save your current video and work on it later, or select another saved video to work on or delete. For the latter action, tap and slide your finger to select one of your saved videos, and then tap on it to load it, or tap the trash can icon at the top of the screen to delete it. You can save up to 10 videos to work on later.
How to edit Vine videos
Once you've recorded or uploaded a Vine video, you can begin the editing process. Tap the white arrow at the top-right of the screen to begin. On the next screen, tap Edit to do more in-depth editing of your video, which we'll discuss in the next step.
To edit your Vine video, first tap the segment of the video that you wish to edit. Then, you can tap and slide the two white bars at either edge of the screen to control where the segment starts and ends. You can also tap and slide the segment to re-order it with respect to the other segments in the video, or tap the segment again to de-select it.
While you have a segment selected, you can also tap the icons at the top of the screen for further options. The copy icon allows you to make a copy of this segment, as long as this will not result in your video being longer than six seconds. The trash can icon allows you to delete this segment. The speaker icon allows you to turn the sound for this segment on or off.
If you currently don't have a video segment selected to edit, tap Save to save any changes you have made and quit editing (or tap the back arrow to discard your changes).
How to share a Vine video
After you've made any necessary edits to your Vine video, and have saved it, tap the Share.
You will now have to select your sharing options for your Vine video. Your device will show you what options are available to you, and you simply tap one to select it.
From there, you will need to follow the instructions based on which platform you have selected. For example, here, when sharing to Facebook, simply type a caption and then tap Post.
If you're sending them in an email with a service like Gmail, add your recipients, type your message, and then tap the Send button.
That's about everything you need to know and do in order to make and post a video on Vine!
Now that you've done everything that you need to do to sign up for and start using Vine, let's get to it! In this lesson, we'll cover some of the basic ways to navigate and use Vine.
To use Vine, you must first launch the Vine app on your mobile device. From there, you can browse or search for Vine videos to watch. After watching a video, you can also "like" it, comment on it, or share it. You can even "follow" Vine channels or users to see more videos that you're interested in.
We've included step-by-step sets of instructions below for each of these four fundamental groups of actions on Vine.
How to log into Vine
Find the Vine application on your mobile device and tap it to open it.
Tap the Log In tab, and then tap Log In with Email.
(NOTE: If you signed up for Vine with your Twitter account instead, tap Log In with Twitter and enter your Twitter account credentials instead of doing step 3.)
Tap the box labelled "Email" and use your device's keyboard to enter the email address that you used to sign up for Vine. Then tap the box labelled "Password" and type in the password that you picked to protect your Vine account. When you're done, tap the checkmark icon in the top-right corner.
How to find Vine videos to watch
Your home page on Vine will contain a few different popular videos that you can watch, but if you're looking for something specific, start by tapping the magnifying glass icon underneath the main toolb.ar
From here, you can tap Popular Now to see videos on Vine that already have a lot of views, or tap On the Rise to see videos that are racking up views quickly.
Below that, you can tap one of the "Channels" to see videos from a particular person or about a particular subject, or (if you scroll further down) tap one of the "Trending Tags" to see videos with certain popular hashtags (basically a user-generated organizing system) in their captions or comments. For each of these, you can tap the Featured/Top tab to see the most popular videos for a channel or tag, or tap the Recent tab to see videos that have been posted in this tab recently.
You can also tap in the box labelled "Search Vine" to search for Vine users, hashtags, or videos using keywords. We'll explain how to do that in depth in the next step.
When searching on Vine with keywords, suggested searches will appear as you type; tap one to make it your search. Below the suggestions, you will see samples of users, hashtags, and videos on Vine that match your search terms. Tap a user to go to their profile on Vine, or tap a hashtag to see all Top or Recent videos associated with that hashtag. You can also tap View All beside any of the three content types to see all users, hashtags, or Vine videos (Top and Recent) associated with your search terms.
Oh, and one more thing: tap the left arrow in the top-left corner to return to the browsing menu.
How to watch and interact with videos on Vine
Hopefully, you've found a video on Vine that you want to watch by now. Now we're going to show you some different functions on a Vine video, and what they mean to you.
Let's start with the basics: when a Vine video is centered on your device's screen, it will automatically start playing repeatedly. If you want to stop (or re-start) the current video that you are viewing, simply tap the video.
At the top of a Vine video, you can see the user who posted the video, when they posted it, and how many times it has been played since it was posted. If you tap the user's name, you can go to their profile page on Vine, where you can potentially follow their activity. See our "How to Follow on Vine" section later on.
Below a Vine video, there are other options for what you can do with the video. For example, tapping People Also Watched will take you to a list of more popular videos on Vine that people who watched the current video also watched.
The other icons here do more specific things. If you tap the heart icon, you can "like" the video (or undo this), which can make it easier for you to find again. If you tap the speech bubble icon, you can read and submit comments about the video. If you click the export icon, you can share the video on your own Vine account, or on your other social media accounts. We'll explain more about each of these functions in the proceeding steps.
If you "like" a Vine video, you can easily find it again by going to your profile on Vine. Tap the head icon below the main toolbar to visit your Vine profile, and then tap Likes to see a list of videos that you have "liked" on Vine.
In the comments section, you can read what other people have said about a video. If you'd like to add your own comment, tap in the box labelled "Say Something Nice" and use your device's keyboard to type in what you want to say. Then tap the paper airplane icon to submit your comment.
When sharing a Vine video, you can share it on your own profile on Vine (called a "Revine"), or on your accounts on Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr. You can also share it with another Vine user, or a friend who's not on Vine (via email).
If you'd like to share the video with a specific person, tap the box labelled "Share with a Friend?" and tap the person's name in the drop-down menu that appears. Otherwise, tap the check boxes here to select whether to share this video on your own Vine profile, and/or on your Twitter, Facebook, and/or Tumblr accounts (you will have to log into the other accounts that you select). When you're done, tap Revine. (NOTE: depending on which accounts you chose to share the video on, this button may say Revine and Share, or just Share.)
How to follow on Vine
"Following" on Vine allows you to more closely track Vine videos from a certain user or topic. To follow a user on Vine, start by visiting their profile (see step 1 in the "How to Watch and Interact with Videos on Vine" section, or step 3 in the "How to Find Vine Videos to Watch" section). Tap the Follow button to have their videos show up more often on your main Vine page.
You can also tap the star icon in the top-right corner of a Vine user's profile to mark them as a "favourite". This will allow you to be notified whenever they post a new Vine video!
You can also follow "channels", groups of Vine videos on particular topics. To do so, start browsing videos in that channel (see step 2 in the How to Find Vine Videos to Watch" section). Then, tap the "+" icon in the top-right corner to follow this channel (or click the checkmark icon to stop following it). More videos from this channel will show up on your main Vine page.
To get back to your main Vine page to see videos from users and channels that you follow, tap the house icon below the main toolbar. You can also tap the bell icon beside it to see notifications of new videos that your "favourite" Vine users have posted!
